Does anyone have any experience of getting one fitted? Can anyone recommend a good company? Or ones to avoid?

Dolphin Lifts of Stanford. They were brilliant when I broke my leg. Upfront installation cost followed by reasonable monthly rental.

Depending what you want to spend, theres quite a few companys online that do S/H refurbished lifts for a fraction of the price when new. When my mum had one fitted back in 2014 it cost around £4500 just for a straight 14ft lift. They,re very expensive when new but virtually worthless to resell as we found out last year when we had to clear the house. If you wanted S/H theres some good bargains to be had, plenty on Ebay.

I would second Dolphin stairlifts. Go through Dolphin Mobility and if the Ashford franchise is busy, a lead from head office will likely be prioritised over a local lead, may mean a quicker turnaround time.
Ask about refurbished lifts, they only take the best lifts for refurbishment, some may have only been used for weeks. Also i would strongly advise taking out a breakdown package (a set of batteries plus call out fee will more than cover the cost) parts are ridiculously expensive otherwise.
Avoid acorn lifts they are generally noisier, less well constructed and less reliable, avoid going to Stannah direct, Dolphin are one of only a few authorised companies (if not only) to install Stannah lifts and they are cheaper than going through Stannah.
Best straight lift in my opinion is Meditek and best curved is Stannah both are available through Dolphin.

I agree the breakdown/service packages are fortunes with the bigger companys. My mum had the complete breakdown service callout package.Only last year she rang me one day to say her lift wasnt working, she lived some distance away from me so i wasnt able to get there straight away so i told her to change the batteries in the handset which she did, still not working so i told her to ring the engineer as she had emergency cover.Engineer came out and found no fault, the cheeky ******** sent her a bill for £200 as they said they had been falsely called out.I soon got on the case and told them i had also known it to suddenly stop working before for no apparent reason,it had done a couple of times. They still insisted on the money so i threatened to name n shame them and asked how an 84 year old lady would have any technical knowledge of how a stair lift should work other than pressing a button to operate it.They eventually gave up with their demands.

They can stop quite frequently for no reason often dust or hair under the contacts, sometimes the motherboard crashed and switching off and back on would fix it.
Once had a call out to a lift that would start up on its own, after numerous visits, discussions with the manufacturer no result. Then it happened when i was there, it turned out to be on the same frequency as the sky remote and it would send it upstairs or call it down when they turned sky on or off! If she had been charged a call out fee every time I visited it would have run into thousands.

I've known interaction between different devices as well, in my case the Tomy dumptruck toy and the wireless baby monitor. Every time the baby cried, the r/c dumptruck would move around the room.

Was the dump truck an ingenious idea to save the cost of nappies and always on call?

An unlikely explanation!
Obviously yet another case of telekinesis. Time to get the child exorcised. Looking forward to seeing you and Mrs Button in the local rag looking glum and claiming the house is haunted.

Wasn't expecting so many replies. Thank you all so much.
It's more for a permanent frailty issue than a temporary one.
Was wondering if there were any, "we'll have the equipment back when/if it's no longer needed", type deals. That there are refurbished sellers out there answers that question I guess.
Could mean the difference between someone being able to stay in their own home, or having said home basically confiscated by the state to pay for care home costs.
I could go off on a rant about that right now. They played by the rules. Worked and paid taxes and NI all of their lives etc. Told and believed they'd be OK if they played by the rules. All to have it robbed off of them at the end, when they're already dealing with the obvious getting old stuff.
Just how ill do you actually have to be these days to get looked after by the NHS?

I had one fitted for my Mum when she was terminaslly ill on that basis. It was from a company which specialised in reconditioned units. It was a long time ago and I can't remember their name or find any relevant correspondence. Sorry it's none too helpful.

Precision engineering is always expensive no matter what time of life, there are goverment grants available though.
