"(Brook) house stood empty after this (1987) and it was announced that the Council wished to demolish it to build a car park. There was great public outcry at this and moves were made to have the building listed. Then overnight the building was demolished, contractors working on Saturday 16 July 1988 to reduce it to a pile of rubble."

i believe the demolition was in order to have a coach park there.
the idea being that passengers would disembark, spend a small fortune in our designer emporiums on their way to the white cliffs experience.
all long before my time so i stand to be corrected.
Where was it? Was it where Riverside is now, next to the Dover Medical Centre? The flood plain?

I would support moving the shelter to the transport museum but I think an industrial estate at Whitfield is the wrong place for the museum. Surely premises in town could be found for it?

# 42......confirms Dover District Council`s solution to their rumour denials ...midnight clearance strategy...
Flood Plain....DDC ignored their own evidence and the existence of a flood plain including Councillors
Scutiny committees and Planning committees ( officer lead ) for two and a half years and incredibly they still
insisted the site was still their preferred site........even when the LDF Inspector rejected the site as unsuitable
for our Hospital.
The Land Swop deal they had hatched up was too lucrative to give up even for the Health care of Dover`s
residents..................

Going back to the shelter, is there any reason why the glass could not be replaced with toughened clear plastic or perspex? If it keeps being replaced with breakable glass, we'll still be contributing to this thread in ten years time.

After writing to Property Services a few days ago, I have now had a reply to the effect that they will repair the broken glass and (as per my request) refurbish the shelter to its former glory.
Another good point is that the Crime Prevention Design Advisor (great title) is being consulted as to what help and advice he can give - maybe CCTV ?

surprised they are willing to spend more money on it, not that much dosh around.
not sure about the glass issue, the people they used to use closed down and another contractor was found for the most recent glass replacement.

That is correct Howard; they need to refurbish the shelter and replace the glass around the same time - and get the CCTV in place too.
I've been told how much the glass will cost and they are looking for quotes on the redec.

roger;
i thank you for your continued support
although already you can see a lot of support for moving it.
thats the problem
rather than give in to mindless vandals we should see what can be done to keep it in place.
I did start down this route but after rejection by the administration(wel the officers who run the council) i gave up.
there are, as iv said in a number of posts a lot more that can be done in lots of different ways.
but it takes a positive approach to want it to stay.
there will be uproar if its allowed to be moved and i will be in the front campaigning against it.
sadly roger in reality these things moved so fast;
just going back over the years;
brook housel
no its not going, pulled down in the early -hours(why the early hours?)=
elms vale avairy;
no its not closing;l
overnight it did
doesn't inspire confidence when told this, although roger i accept your word
