Peter
You have summed up the whole thing perfectly. You are right, working class is no more than a state of mind, yet monarchy still continues to be a 'social condition'.
I have nothing against the queen and her family, they say some pretty funny things. If anything I just think it's all a bit silly: kings, queens, princes, princesses, evil stepmothers, dragons etc.
As for this gift it is not the signified but the signifier that shows Michael Gove to be so lacking in imagination and understanding. He wants legacy and he comes up with this, the sort of symbol that stinks of oil tycoon, it's just a cheap, tasteless and thoughtless jesture.
The money could be used to mark the occasion and demonstrate the nobility (in the noble sense) and kindness of the queen. Some kind of social project/object that would show the monarchy to be a truly good thing, marking the queen for her commitment to our country.
Instead we have "look at my yacht, aren't we proud to be british"...nice one Mr Gove!

The last I heard was they were furnishing a barge for the occasion and planning to float it down the Thames.

It's called the royal barge, flying a big banner: "we're not all in this together!"
Narcistic self-flattery!

Well the Daily Mail support the idea.
So, idea by Michael Gove, supported by the Daily Mail. I can only conclude that it's a really stupid idea.

Separate to the Gove suggestion the Daily Mail has been campaigning for a privately funded Royal Yacht since last year and, in fact, it is a very good idea and only mean spirited republicanism would find anything against it. Perhaps people should find out about what is suggested by the Mail before making ill-informed knee jerk criticisms, you might be surprised.

I read the whole thing this morning, far from ill informed.
As I said before, spend the money, celebrate the jubilee, just come up with something a bit more thoughtful.
People will start to think the monarchy are not moving with the times....*cough*

Then what is wrong with it DT1?
Privately funded with not a penny from the taxpayers, a high tech shi[p which itself would be a floating advert for British design and technology. A mission to promote British business worldwide, offering scientific research facilities and training for hundreds of disadvantaged children. Now tell me what can possibly be wrong with that, a royal yacht serving as a national flagship. Your only objection therefore can be what I referred to, knee jerk and mean spirited republicanism.

I think they back paddled on this last night...we suddenly found out it was to be privately funded without a penny from the taxpayer with all sorts of goody two shoe attributes thrown into the mix, like scientific research facilities and all essentially for the use of disadvantaged children..Cant you tell when you are being spun?

...this was only after the proverbial hit the fan. Downing St in the guise of yon Prime Minister got the PR jitters and no doubt the phone lines were burning. If nothing else it was a PR own goal.

Perhaps they could get one of the SeaFrance ferries at a knockdown price for her.
