Oh dear! I cant believe this one. A new yacht for the Queen says Gove ( for £60million ), yet they keep feeding us this line about severe austerity. Tons of people are losing their jobs because of cuts, directly because of government cuts, and he wants to spend all this money on a new yacht for the Queen! He taketh away massively with one hand but he giveth to the already rich with the other.
Im afraid i always thought Gove was a product of the 'twilight zone'.

Reading the comments I'd agree but it amounts to £1 per subject. Is it proposed that the yacht be built in this country therefore increasing employment?

Actually it does make sense.
Yes it would certainly bring some jobs to a shipyard or two at a particularly difficult time for them and that is not to be sniffed at. But more important we also need to remember that this would be more than just a Royal Yacht for the use of HMQ.
It would be a floating sales exhibition that can be used to promote British business and we need to penetrate new markets given the Eurozone sickness. Low growth in the Eurozone can be expected for well over a decade at least.... Then once we are free of the EU, even better. Such a Royal Yacht would certainly more than pay for itself so it certainly has a lot going for it and the best time to find the cash to invest in new promotional initiatives is when in the depths of a recession.... You can get a bargain price to build it and then be well positioned to exploit the recovery when it happens capturing market share.

I can't see why everything is all "cobbled together govt", blah, blah, blah, it is getting rather boring on nearly every thread going.....
Someone had suggested something and it was considered and turned down, surely it is a good thing that people have ideas and they have had consideration ??
Following on from Tony's point, it would actually probably cost me about 2p a year for 50 years of use is nothing compared with the benefits it could have...
Been nice knowing you :)

It's a constant source of irritation to some on the left that the vast majority of our population (including most of the 'working class' - which nowadays is more a state of mind than a social condition) value the monarchy and have a deep respect for the Queen.
But according to the old saw, empty vessels make the most noise.

My brother in law was in the Navy and served on the Britannia. It wasn't just a luxury yacht for the Queen as a lot of people seem to think. It did an awful ot to promote British interests and business abroad. As Barry says a new one would do the same and the cost per person would be trivial. On Radio 4 this morning they were talking about it being funded privately anyway.

It would be worth the cost just to remind the rest of the world we can still build such a prestigious item and could result in even more jobs.
I would prefer my taxes went on this so called luxury than on a lot of the foreign aid.

I'd still be willing to put a pound in... if it does now go ahead the surprise has been spoilt a little though!
I wonder what state the country would be in if there had been a Lab/Lib government hobbled together?
I've never seen that saying before Peter.

Gove has always hovered close to the `Buffoon ministers list`............he is now on it..
To suggest this, like many who think we are all in this together, have no idea/consideration what is going on in our
country to ordinary families.

Perhaps some unemployed workers would be willing to offer their services which would lower the cost of building it in the UK?

Bombardier have a nice order from Southern building more 377's their version of South Eastern's Electrostars.
As a present for HMQ, well, words fail me. Perhaps that's not a bad thing otherwise the Tower beckons.

This is ridiculous!
A private family having exclusive access to an estimated State-owned wealth of £17 billion.
Liz with an estimated private fortune of £300 million.
Liz's extended family with their private fortunes.
And all of them costing the People enormous sums of money.
How much does it cost to furnish them with thousands of armed guards?
But even worse is the mania of Windsor-worship.
As so-called heads of just about everything, from the State to the Government, from the Church of England to the Army, they try to make themselves the objest of worship.
Bah humbug!
