13:5379798Don't think so Bern.
It's a bit like the quote often attributed to Churchill' "We sleep safely at night because rough men stand ready to visit violence on those who would harm us."
If someone was breaking into my house I would endeavour to beat the f**k out of them, if someone had broken into my house and I did the same that is the morality of a 'lynch mob', as for beating the f**k out of someone to see if he was thinking of breaking into my house.....................

16:0879810the bottom line surely is that we must not and cannot allow the state to step beyond the law any more than they would allow us to step beyond it.
If the law is wrong there is a perfectly good democratic process with appropriate checks and balances for changing it.

16:2579816But the State also has a duty to defend and protect its people.
Sometimes that may mean doing some unpalatable things. I sincerely I there are a few 'Callans' around for that!

16:5279829It would be naive to think that 'black ops' are not done.
Idealism is all very well but we live in a hard dangerous world.

17:0579834PaulB, stet. No worse than the stupid asterisk in the Sun most days.
Weird that the Guardian/Telegraph print words each day that the 'popular' papers choose not to in spite of the fact that the red top readers use them every day?
There is, I would suggest a place for 'obscene' language (which was totally bowdlerised in this case) in terms of emphasis?
(You being such a clever clogs - wadyamean?)

20:0779860It is confusing isn't it? Murder is against the law but is accepted and expected in time of War. There are some things, I guess, that distort the law.
Bob - language is beautiful, anglo-saxon language more than most. There are some truly lovely words that I love that would not make their way onto these pages!!!

00:1779888Bern, I blow notes through bagpipes, they can be equally effective!
