18:1266937no wonder the honour was not given out, this was meant for self effacing individuals who spend a lifetime doing good deeds around the town.
definitely not for politicos.
hope someone nominates me next year i quite fancy the idea of driving my herd of cows through biggin street.

19:4366948It has taken along time for Dover to be given the right to be able to bestow the right to become an Honorary Freeman of Dover, it was back in my time as mayor that I went to the Houses of Parliment with Lord Boyce to get this motion through the house of commons and the house of Lords.
There were three people nominated but its not an Honour that will be handed out lightly.

21:5666968Let us hope it doesn't go to any politicians, but to a deserving member of the public. What are the odds?

the word on the street is that you personally were responsible for the shambles.

22:0166971And which shambles would that be Howard? Being a modest sort I hate to take credit when it isn't due.

22:0266972I have already told that it will not go ahead with the Town council at this time so I think this might come up again ,but not till after the locals next May when you will see a new council.

07:4666991There were three nominated, but the majority of the Town Councillors attending the meeting, voted against the principle of Freemen of Dover.
It won't happen unless it comes up for a vote again and more people attend the meeting to cast their vote.

08:3167003It would have gone through last time, but councillors were on holiday, so met stale mate that is why it is adjourned

10:5867009Why would Councillors vote against such a thing?

11:4967011surely they would have a debate on the qualities of the candidate and then vote on whether they deserve the title?

11:5567012It will be discussed again very soon. All councillors have had (and will again) the chance to state their views. Nobody has disputed the worth of any of the nominees.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

12:1967014I understand that the majority of those who voted against it, were against it in principle, nothing to do with "were the candidates worthy of such an honour".

17:1467043Hence my question Roger. It almost smacks of them waiting either for the nod from some higher being, or they want to give the award to one of their own and can't without causing a fuss, so they've blocked anyone from getting it.

19:0467059I could Howard, but think that it would be best for someone at the Town Council to do so.

19:0867061Sid why do you think that they are waiting for a nod from some higher beings,Town Councillors are a intelligent bunch you know, and they discuss the pro's and Cons of the matter, there is no whip as you people keep indicating.Personally I am in favour of Freeman, but other people aren't.It is a matter of personal choice of those Cllrs on what they think the majority of thier electorate would want.
It may be that some Councillors don't agree with it because for instance it would cost money to have a reception and what do the Freeman get, some sort of engraved momento,at what cost. They may think that the people put forward are not suitable,as I dont know who they are as I am not a Town Councillor I don't know. But at the end of the day each Cllr will vote and the highest vote either for or against wins. But I bet the Indies vote as a group,so much for Indies, perhaps they should be called Groupies of no Political Party.beats me!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
