To repeat my previous message .The fountain will be boxed over through out the Summer .A new cover is being made .A new fountain is being planned see next weeks cabinet agenda.
The flower beds were laid fallow for a few months .Once replanted they looked spendid .Anyone who knows about gardening knows every so often the beds have to be left fallow.
Perhaps a community group could give their time and give our flower beds some tlc?

I recall last year they were left fallow until after the Spring Bank Holidays and planted after visitors had departed.
Another waste are the hundred of daffodils that used to provide a welcome burst of colour at the top of Whitfield Hill but are now so smothered by brambles that they hardly register.

I think I know enough about gardening to comment.
Easy to change the soil in tubs and easy to add fertilizer to beds only farmers leave land fallow to plough the growth back into the soil as green fertilizer. Came under the heading of crop rotation when I was at school.
Why not be honest and say the council saved money by not planting until so late in the season.

just over a month to easter, has anything moved on?
it looks like the fountain is dead in the water(no pun intended) so will the new water feature be up and running?

Perhaps some kind person will scatter some wild meadow-flowers seed in the empty containers, might fill a gap and provide some greenery and colour!

Poundland have got a range of mixed packets that would be ideal - for £1!

Patience
the wheels of DDC & DTC may move slow at times, but they are committed to replacing the fountain with something more "user friendly", less prone to damage and breakdown due to high jinks or vandalism and all in time for the Olympic Torch.
also the benches and bollards in Market Square are due to be repainted by the South Foreland Rotary & Princes Trust, there is budget for the planters and other decoration etc.

Could it be that Dover will be the 1st with a 'virtual fountain' called 'Patience'? Ross is in the know

we have been told that there is an extensive programme of events in market square this summer leading up to the olympic flame arriving.
work needs to start soon to be up and running in time for the events, so far we don't even know for certain what is planned for the fountain/water feature.

It will be a set of "bubblers" a bit like those by Chummy's in Folkestone - it means that when they are switched off for events there will be a much more usable space in Market Square

Surely all the benches and other public street furniture could be refurbished and
repainted by the Community Pay-Back team - that's what they're there for.

Nor do I Ross, I just thought they were the appropriate people as they are supposed to be paying back to the community for their non-custodial crimes.
