20:4268182Not too long I should imagine Paul, the speed technology moves today. On another subject, over the year`s I`ve seen numerous then and now picture`s in various railway books, but never seen anything similar to what you`re doing now on here, though I haven`t bought any railway books for some year`s now.

20:5868192That`s great Paul, your namesake missed that one. I should imagine though that those shabbily dressed people would knock the value off a few of those flats behind. Can`t you do something with Burlington House?

07:1968256Most of the old photos that have been put up, show a more elegant, "posher", more "well to do" Dover than the one we have now - which is very sad really.
But having said that, not many of the old elegant buildings that are still standing, look elegant anymore and that is down to the owners of course - who should be chased up to improve them - section 215 springs to mind.

08:0668262We are in an old building (I hate all those stairs

) and in the 6 years I have been at the shop, as far as I know, the landlord has done nothing to the building except rake in his rent money.
Not a bad little earner being an absentee landlord is it.
Wouldn't it be nice if we could be totally impractical

and restore the old style shop fronts to these lovely old buildings instead of the ugly ones that so many have.

19:0968794What intrigues me is the number of people to be seen in the old pictures, compared the total lack of people in the new picures.
Is Dover really turning into a ghost town?

Sid, you would have thought so if you had been on the seafront yesterday afternoon. After the M.N. wreath laying I had a walk down to have a look at the new Sea Sports centre and the new wave formation work as I have not been down there for a while.
The promenade was absolutely deserted and it was a beautiful day as well. I took some photos and will try to post them later. This was at around one o'clock.

22:5168805Sid - as in the other thread Dover had a population of 40k+ pre WW2, went down to 12k at the end of the war and still not yet up to 30k.
That said some of my photos i have taken when quieter plus in 1900 the camera was still quite a novelty so cause crowds to gather !!

06:3068816Great pictures Paul, they make everywhere look so much grander.
I know we have a catch 22 situation with Dover and the shops - we want a thriving and vibrant Town, with better shops, but won't/don't support the ones we do have and until those we still have are thriving, not just surviving, we won't get any new ones, maybe some relocating, but not many new ones.

I think you need to review where you are with regard to town centre.
Having A policy of moving everything to Whitfield is fine
but the effect will be as we see a town centre fighting to survive.
I did say this would happen when b and q were able to re locate to whitfield
sadly no one agreed.

07:0968821I'm not an advocate of moving things to Whitfield Keith, I'm an advocate of supporting Town Centres and Town Centre businesses.
When I mentioned relocating in my posting above, I was talking about relocating some of the "appropriate" businesses from the other end of say London Road, nearer to the Town.

07:2168823roger OH DEAR roger
You may recall some time ago I posted on the subject of B and Q moving to Whitfield THE ONLY 2 cllrs to vote against this move was myself and D Smallwood.
and you were present.
It's fine saying it on here, but to stand up and be counted a little different.
I recall your fine leader slagging me off(as usual) when I spoke against thre move
and It was fine that Iwas in the minority.
But I warned then what would happen to Dover town centre.

16:5968872I don't recall it coming to full council for our approval, I thought it went through Planning.
I didn't have a problem with B & Q going to Whitfield though, I don't think that has created a mass exodus of business out of Town.

18:1768881Keith you have a peculiar view of the power of a second rate DIY store compared to Morissons at pulling punters down to the town
