Dover Express - failed again...

Their lack of Dover knowledge is outstanding, they really do not know what goes on in the town now they don't even have offices here. Jobsworths with no real interest in the town an more. Very different to Terry Sutton's day when they even reported council meetings.

27 June 2013 09:01235124On that so called community paper w agreeALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS - 27 June 2013 09:06235126Yes must agree with the above post the paper does nothing for Dover as Mr Williams has pointed out years ago when they had their offices in Dover and yes when I nearly drown in the port at the age of 11 Mr Sutton was out to my house with in a hour of it happing for astory but that was the good old days of the job of a reporter,now they expect you to go to them with a story or report of a events to even a "We might put it in " there are no local reporters like the old ones,Mr Sutton and I do not see eye to eye but on saying that the old boy is still going around with note book and pen,when he packs up I think we will see the end of the Dover Express,they should drop the name Dover and call it the East-Kent -News,.

27 June 2013 09:10235128Old style reporting in the very early Terry Sutton days, and other reporters, plus an office in the town, did a lot to make the paper newsworthy
since then a new editor came in shut the office, sensationalised stories that realy were non events
and moved away from locals
on top of that having run articles on others errors
they produced pictures and stories that did not relate to each other
The papers gone down hill

But I'm afraid the proportion of towns with newspaper offices in them is tiny these days, and we are also certainly not Jobsworths - all we care about is getting out a good paper out that the people of Dover will like, and sometimes we fall short.
Finally, I have been to three key council meetings in the last fortnight and not seen another reporter there.

The local mp covered every week and a big letters page not to bad .

This event is one of the biggest that takes place slap bang in the centre of town and was well publicised in advance so in my opinion there is no possible excuse for not giving extensive coverage in a local paper that carries this towns name.

The new chairman was given all contacts and the Mercury, who did cover the event, would have had the same information as the Mercury.

This is very disappointing to us as our visitor numbers were consequently down this year and many people stated that that they did not know it was on as it was not in the paper. We may as well pack up if our events are not publicised and attended as we almost completely rely on them to finance our projects.
It was particularly disappointing as I have written articles for the Express at the drop of a hat recently so it would be nice to receive support in return.
Granted there was a brief mention of the weekend, using Claire Hawkins' pictures and quotes mainly about the CGI development, printed last week, but that's too late to get people in through the door. Also WHPS were not even mentioned as hosting the event.
I hope this is just a temporary glitch this year and that matters improve. Some of our local volunteer groups rely on support from the papers! - 27 June 2013 15:14235186Kill 2 birds with one stone.

Kent Miners Festival August Bank Holiday Monday 2013
The new, Kent Miners Festival Committee, have been working hard all year, to organize this FREE local community event. This year it is being held at the "Tilmanstone Colliery Welfare Ground" from 10am till 5pm and is to commemorate the "Centenary of Coaling at Tilmanstone Colliery".
In its fifth year and previously attended by thousands, we are pleased to bring this event to yet another different, mining community area that is connected with the former Kent Coalfield.Giving our communities the opportunity, for them to socialise with former colleagues and families and family friends, is what it is all about.
Giving something back to the people, from within those communities, is what we want to achieve.
Getting local heritage groups, charities, health and well-being groups, to come along and take part, to make this a true community event, is what we are all hoping for.
Our Collieries have long since disappeared but not our communities or our community spirit. They survive and will continue to survive, thanks to the support shown from within these communities.
Moving the Miners Statue onto the Miners Way Trail, setting up Heritage Centres at Aylesham, open Wednesdays 10am till 2pm and now at Elvington, open on Tuesdays 10am till 2pm, are promoting and preserving our Kent Mining History. East Kent Railway is attempting to bring back steam to our Mining Heritage Railway, with renovating the St Dunstan Loco that worked for so many years at Snowdown Colliery. With plans for Betteshanger being announced later this year, put all these together and we are certain that the story of the 'Kent Miner' is not finished yet.
To continue with all this good work, we need your help. Organizing a free community event is not easy. We are always in need of funding and donations. However, there are many other ways in which you can help. We need help with organizing now and on the day. Marshalling, selling programmes and raffle prizes. We need raffle prizes, stalls, charities, local youth groups, dance groups, acrobats and any other local talent, to come along and entertain our visitors. Bring along your dogs and join in the community dog show. 5 a-side football, tug-o-war, budding bowlers and other sporting events all being organized and need teams to apply?
Brass and Silver Bands are the theme for this year, so if you are involved with anything like this or similar, please contact me.

27 June 2013 20:39235214The Dover Express is fast becoming very dissapointing.Lots of local events that i would expect to be covered dont even seem to get a mention,and no mention of the armed forces event because of the lack of reporters etc is no excuse,its all very sad.The Dover Express is the only paper that i ever buy,i dont bother with the daily papers.The quality of the express is getting worse and i may not buy it for much longer.
