Keith - don't think, please, that to question the way councillors operate is a personal attack. It genuinely isn't. I am though profoundly disturbed at the lack of audit (and therefore easily accessed accountability) in this area. Your own committment and dedication are not in question at all.
Maybe some councillors dont like publicised surgeries , because they might get asked what work they have been doing or intend to do

BERN;
I agree with the lack of accountability although surgeries wont make any difference to accountability

Hi Keith , it would make coucillors easier to find at a set time and place to be asked what they have been doing , and plan to do , rather than be passive recipients of press releases.

Tried that one....................set time ............set place..........Public question time at full council.............all the councillors were there.................same result...........nothing..............only the Chairman and leader can reply............If they hear the question???
I just checked who the councillors for my area are , the only one I have ever seen or heard of is Roger,
Reg a surgery would be different to a council meeting which is hidebound by process , just a shame there arnt more of them

very true sarah, council meetings are carefully stage managed.
doubt if any searching questions would be answered.

At every DTC full council meeting there is a spot to give answers to any question sent in at least three days before the meeting. As the meetings are open to the public the questioner can be there to hear the answer and (possibly more importantly) hear any comments the councillors wish to make. It has been some years since I heard of one being asked. The last I recall was before I was elected and I had sent it in.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

It is possible that voters who met councillors at surgeries etc might feel more comfortable asking questions in what could be an intimidating environment which is, with the best will in the world, process driven. This isn't a broad swipe at councillors or even at the processes - just a genuine wish to see if there is a better way...........
But there is no right to reply to the answers given is there Chris ? ( Im asking a question , not making a statement ) Whereas a two way dialogue like that at a surgery is more productive and treats the electors as adult equals rather than passive recipients of one sides opinion/information

I don't hold surgeries, but am happy for people to contact me and ask questions any time of day and in any way that suits them - telephone, email, post, or personal meetings or visits. If I don't know the answer, I'll find out.
Councillors are not special people, just (generally) people who are willing to help their local community in any way they can.
Some have visions of grandeur, some don't.
Roger
Cheers Roger , Ive always found you very approachable

sarah
if your correct and you attended one of the many public forums set up in the priory ward and you attened the one at dover college
you would have met me (yuk lol)
but also at that time cllr marion munt who attended all the meetings
and at times roger.
so you saw all 3 of your cllrs.
if you were to get involved in/attend the priory forum you would again ciome across others doing a job and trying to better the priory ward.
and then we have the clarendon and westbury community association which is chaired by our very own town cllr and forumite sheila amos who is very friendly and would welcome meeting you anytime im sure.
sometimes informal meetings are better and as iv tried to say in my postings there are many ways to meet your cllr, of course added to this you could also
write to them/phone them to meet you at date/time best for you
most will accomodate you.

I think Ive met you Keith but I dont have a great memory for names , The councillors I was refereing to are the ones listed on the Council website , who I am presuming are the current councillors , its not much good listing ex coucillors who I have met is it ?
Im not quite sure why you think I am incorrect in remembering that I used to attend the meetings at Dover college , they where usually held in the library by the international studies centre , Rupert the geography master was the college rep , the headmaster didnt usually attend and Barry was often there , do you need anymore clarification of my statement that I used to go ?
