The industry is becoming polarised with big Wetherspoons and Marstons type managed houses at one end and small owner-operated freehouses at the other. Everything in between is operated either by greedy property companies or out-of-touch breweries who rely for their profits on draining the life savings of a constant churn of new entrants to the trade, thus ensuring the eventual extinction of the middle sector.

I have'nt got a clue Peter! But the point I will make again is this, the great old pubs of our past are where they belong, in the past! Tonight I was in a Weatherspoons in Canterbury, a sirloin steak meal, with a glass of wine, plus a second sirlion steak with scampy and a pint, plus a bottle of red was just under £25.00 total! They had 12 hand pump beers at under £2.50 a pint, plus ciders and lagers etc, on getting back to Dover the Eight Bells was even cheaper!
I am sorry if the C + S has closed, but why pay Sheps prices in a Sheps house when it can be a £1 + cheaper else where?
The 16 old malt is now kicking in and I am going to sleep in the shed!

I agree completely with Peter and Phil.
When we owned the Ravens we tried to sell it as a going concern for over a year, we only received one derisory offer from a local publican for less than we had paid as sitting tenants. We then battled through planning eventually winning on appeal to get change of use hoping that would provoke more interest but sadly nobody was interested in continuing the business.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Love or hate them,i agree the Weatherspoons are certainly good value for money. We often use the Eight bells, they do a real good breakfast there. Some of the smaller pubs in town are great, but some past and present dont do much to help themselves.I,ve been in a few with some real rude, arrogant bar staff with regular drinkers that just want to stare you out and make you feel about as welcome as a shark in a swimming pool.A pub since closed used to have a chalked sign outside saying "come in for a cold beer and a warm welcome".That statement should have been the other way round.

And Wetherspoons give CAMRA members £40 of ale vouchers every year. If they charged the same as most pubs I would probably not go, but with a steak or mixed grill with trimmings and a pint of Ruddles, all for £6.49 (on Tuesdays) or an edible curry for the same price (on Thursdays), I'm quite happy to be seen there.

i should add that all beers are £.3 per pint, there is a marquee outside for overspill from the pub and there will be a band playing this evening.
