The Falstaff, I have always thought it a shame that such a nice looking building manages to look at eye level so scruffy on the outside, so much so that I have never been inside.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

such a pity that more is not made of such a beautiful building.

I used the Falstaff in the 70.s when it was owned by the grandparents of one of my football playing mates. They had it since the war and little had changed inside, then it was 2 rooms divided by a middle bar.Obviously after they died the place was revamped and the rent went up accordingly...bled dry leaving very little room for profit. Supported it after Rogers grand opening but it went downhill and it closed suddenly taking all the donated memorablia with it...ask Croc for his experiences.
The anti smoking ban was introduced without much thought. It's forced drinkers and smokers onto the streets and pavements outside the boozers leaving the pubs inside smoke and customer free. Not a pretty sight and as others have mentioned made pubs uninviting and intimidating.

I wish them well, but hope they don't aim for the bottom section of Society - as before.

The Crown and Sceptre in Elmsvale Road is closed.
The ex landlord has left a mountain of rubbish outside on the pavement.
I had contacted Waste Services and Environmental Health at DDC and they contacted Shepherd Neame and it will be cleared today/tomorrow.
I think the ex-landlord should be fined; certainly hope S.N, charge him.

A shame but not a surprise, the Crown has had a series of tennents in the last few years and none have made a real go of things. the Boars Head seems to go from strength to strenght, just not enough trade to keep two houses going, I wonder what Sheps will do woth it?

cannot see anything other than conversion into flats, as said above there is not sufficient trade to keep 2 pubs going so close to each other. the wheelwrights and kingfisher both went that way and no doubt others will in time.

not sure if that sign refers to the pub it is placed on or just a general thing.

didn't last long under the new management, they seemed to be aiming for a different clientele.

That blurb from S.N. must have been written by Walt Disney. A very brave/silly/imaginative person will be needed to take it over.

soon just be pub companies left with a smattering of pubs that specialise in something like music or food.

Free Houses are much better than a tied house - cheaper drinks and generally better quality food too.

It is a fare guess that most of us on the forum belong to a common age group, and, as much as I hate to say it, the pubs of our common youth are gone. I was once a landlord, of a free trade house in the great city of Bath, the last time I looked it was a vegan bistro.
The pubs of our youth are gone, Weatherspoons cometh, such is the future.
