I wholeheartedly agree. I have visited several times. The Menin Gate last post is an experience which leaves one temporarily emotionally drained but very quickly recharges one's pride in fallen loved ones. The Somme museum is incredible too. It's amazing how respectful the locals are. At 2 min silence there are hundreds present but you could hear a pin drop. To experience it all with Christmas lights is my present to myself. You are right, it does indeed make ours seem very poor by comparison

Indeed. The whole market square transforms into almost a fairytale. It's a pleasure sitting in one of the cafe's, pubs or restaurants to share the happy atmosphere, looking out onto the buzz of activity. I shall be visiting friends there very soon to participate in their St Nicolas celebrations. Can't wait.

Yes, I have heard about this. Believe it's the residents who do all the work and make serious collections for a specific charity every year. True Christmas spirit. This town does have some truly community minded people who put themselves out which does balance out against the odd elements that can be utterly unpleasant

First visit to the switch on in my memory, the Newfoundlands used to frequent the Regatta in the past.

Got back in to Dover this evening but missed the lighting up event in the Market Square.
But have seen the lights on the lamp posts this evening, which are not nearly as bad as some had feared.
Town looks festive and people milling around - must be good.

The lights magically turned on just before the Mayor started the countdown and before he 'switched' on the lights! Hilarious. Only in Dover!

Usually when the celeb or whoever presses the big red button its usually just a stage prop that isnt connected to any form of electric.Theres usually someone in the background to switch them on.Someone obviously wasnt paying attention and missed the Q.I,ve been a trader at various events all around Kent at christmas and i,ve seen some cock-ups that you,d never believe.I missed the Dover switch-on today as i was working at the Broadstairs christmas market and switch-on which i,m glad to say went without a hitch.

All in all it was a great success and with the Mayor in charge there was no need to fork out for a snow machine this year.

Did anybody notice the " Gringe"? Allegedly that was the Town Clerk dressed up. If this is indeed true, "well done to her" for going the extra mile. I didn't notice any other Cllrs milling about;- it seems a wasted opportunity to have mixed with the locals and be seen doing so. What better way to gage the mood and the needs of those they represent than mixing with the locals. Well, I do appreciate the efforts made by those who got the job of dressing the centre part of the town for the switch on but can't help but wish there had been a bit more. If comments of it costing £25,000, all but a few pounds, are correct, I can only hope those that made decisions "learn as they go". Catch up with this tale after my return from Ieper / Ypres and St Niklaas.

Post 38: personally I think councillor-free zones have a lot going for them. Places from which councillors are banned except in their capacity as normal human beings and are only allowed in at published, periodic feeding times.
I am content with the notion that a majority of representatives work hard on my behalf and feel called to do so. But hearing a running commentary on their plans for the next sunrise and their participation in the last one is a mite claustrophobic.
