if its not broke dont fix it.
#43 I am really not sure what you mean. The amalgamation of private, third and public sector really is the only way forward and that will inevitably mean embracing private medicine to some degree. No-one has argued (I don't think) that wholesale privitisation was the answer, just that it forms part of the answer. And as Brian points out, if it is broken it needs fixing.......

I think what we do need is to make sure whatever the route we get good patient choice, and value for money for the patient(not share holder)

I do argue that wholesale privatisation is the answer and we need to adopt a continental style insurance based system (not American...)...
But that will never happen realistically. Therefore we must work with the appalling NHS structure and make the best of that and in this these reforms are essential and Bern is right.

thats the problem barryw
hidden agenda realy the tories know they realy want full scale privatisation
and will probably tinker with the NHS in an attempt to achieve just that over a longer period.

i think the rebel blue m.p.'s have done their homework and realise that the reforms will take effect over 2 or 3 years, just in time for the next general election.

Keith - your last comment (oops moved on - #48) shows how a serious debate on health is impossible in this country. I state a personal opinion about what we need to do about health and you make an absurd claim that it is some kind of secret Tory agenda.
The big problem we have in health is that too many people, like you, worry about structures rather than health outcomes. The NHS is a deeply flawed system and the main problem with these reforms is that they do not go far enough - but that is not an argument not to go ahead.

To many people indicates there are a large number not happy with the reforms, and although mr cameron is still to push the reforms through its interesting to see just how this will affect his short stay at number 10

Some interesting thoughts for discussion here, it's a worldwide issue and nothing to do with red or blue agendas in this country -

I take it that RS sees himself as one of the nails in Democracy's coffin. That he has had many opportunities given him to preach to choirs-various is all well and good, but the fact that the cost of attending these myriad forums is carried by the Exchequer married to the fact that it is the Exchequer that he sees as virtually redundant, he is certainly doing his bit.
Once one accepts that government is as nothing compared to business and that the interests of populations are to be seen only in terms of how they relate to business aims then he is one man to listen to.
Fortunately the path of history is a living thing and not just some computer generated forecast. Once drought and flood are controlled then his model will have some validity, but not one minute before.

i would agree about more self monitoring coming into play, i have a blood pressure/heart rate monitor, no doubt others have devices to check their cholesteral level etc.
saves mine and the quacks time so i don't see a problem, i have had a couple of telephone appointments too.
the surgery sends me a letter to say when the doctor will ring giving a few days notice.

I called round to my local GP's surgery yesterday and saw a notice taped to the counter-top to the effect;Do you suffer from anything that is contagious? If so please wait in a separate room. This must turn us all into coughin'-dodgers?
