Hi Howard, it was a bit...well...a bit disorganised. Initially I was waiting with the family on the sea front and was told by some of the stewards that it was the place to be, but at just after 1300 and with no sign of anything happenning, I was scanning around and saw the boat lifting gantry moving around at the Granville, so I took myself and the family off to see the activity over there. We had ring side seats as the boat settled on the water and promptly filled up. Once the boat had been lifted back up and drained, we headed off back to the Sea Sports Centre to rejoin the boat there. One of my girls is pictured above in the black and white shirt standing opposite Brian and I had a nice little chat with John and Nadeem as well as with a whole host of other forumites. It was great to put faces to names and have a good old chinwag in the personal.

you were on the ball neil it was all rather disorganised as you say, when i arrived the mayor was where the swimming club meets to the east of the sculpture, she saw me and asked where it was all happening.
which moves me on to wonder who done the organising - the mayor did not get an invite and i assume charlie didn't otherwise he would have been there.

It was a news item on Fridays TV .The press were there also loads of photographers . We were supposed to gather at the Sea Sports Centre ,however things did not go to plan so the boat came by road instead of through the Harbour You must have known Howard ,Tom and Brian were there Lots of people knew about the launch .
The invites came via an email.
Lots of people did indeed know the day and the time , and seeing as it was to be launched the seafront was a pretty certain guess for the place for that to happen ,
However what wasnt clear was exactly where , exactly when and the running order . This was also clearly evident by the amount of wandering people looking slightly lost and even the band , which I presume didnt just happen to be passing , not knowing when to start or stop .

indeed we all new about the launch susan, but the location on the sea front was not made clear and there was no information down there as to what was happening.
may i ask who you got the invite from then we might be able to solve the mystery as to why the mayor and m.p. came to be snubbed?

My invite came through The Canterbury Archelogy Trust .I dont think it was a case of being snubbed.I attend some functions and the Mayors of the District get invited to events which I dont get invited to .
Im the lead member for the Musuem where The Bronze Age Boat is on display .and was on the DDC council when the boat was discovered .

Wording of the invite from Canterbury Archaeological Trust, who are just one of the ten or more organisations involved -
LAUNCH OF THE BOAT 'OLE CRUMLIN-PEDERSEN'
OF THE 'BOAT 1550 BC' PROJECT
Dover, Saturday 12th May 2012
Celebratory programme from 13:00 on the seafront:
Christening of the replica, discussions with the boatbuilders,
questioning the archaeologists, demonstrations on the water
It was never something that was going to go by clockwork given it was subject to technical issues, winds and tides, and as it happens a non-floating situation.

Funny thing about this replica sinking, that's what happened to the one they dug up years ago in Bench street. Talk about coincidence.

... well also at least there's one other Dover based maritime group who knows what it's like to have their vessel sink!

who will clear up the mess now that the boat has gone?
this was originally designated to be a community garden.
