thanfully there were a few celebrities there, firstly council chairman cllr susan nicholas. no event would be complete without her.
the venerable brian dixon looking like he has just seen a pub in the distance.
last but not least chris precious and his happy brood that are clearly enjoying the day, i seem to remember them having a great time at the open day on the roman lawn.

The boat eventually arrived on a trailer with the explanation that it had sunk when lowered into water yesterday, needs a good soaking to get it swollen and the joints sealed. Our Chairman was first in the queue to give it a good looking over.
There was a bloke in the crowd who kept looking at every camera whenever it was pointed towards him but managed to blink at mine (or was it the sound boom about to hit him on the head) then the leader of the team poored champagne over the bow and named the boat the Ole Crumlin-Pedersen after one of the team who had been involved from the start but had passed away recently.

It arrived just in time to spoil my enjoyment of a dish of whelks, there were two speeches explaining what had been happening and thanking all the workers and supporters, the naming ceremony by the guy giving the first one.
I couldn't hear much of what was being said in the second speech because of the ****** brass band that kept playing during them, then we left so I don't know how it ended up - back to the boatshed I would think.
Lots of press and film crews there so there should be plenty of reports coming out.
Nice to say hello Brian

Actually it didn't go into the water until around 1315 this afternoon. I was there with my family to watch it fill with water as it was lowered into the Granville Dock. As soon as it touched the surface, you could see the water coming in. They left it for about 15 minutes to see if the rate of filling would slow, but it didn't, so they brought it back up and let it drain before bringing it round to the sea front on a trailer. Stood around meeting quite a few forumites and chatting before and after the speeches and naming before heading off for some much deserved fish an chips and beer.
Talking with the archaelogil people, it seems that they are now going to do some more work before trying to float it again another day.

One of the builders was explaining to us that they used modern mastic in the gaps instead of the moss that would have been used in the original - they should have stuck to what the old folks knew!
He also explained the real reason for the problems, they had been working up to 2 o'clock at night for the last week to meet the deadline for today.
If they take their time to do it properly there should be no problems and hopefully this will be in time for the other events that they have arranged.

bet those bronze age blokes made many attempts before they got it seaworthy if indeed they did.
incidentally who sent out the invites, i saw her holiness the mayor there in civvies with husband and dog.
when i enquired as to the whereabouts of the bling it transpired that she had not been sent an invitation.

Commented before I got to the next page
I thought that wooden boats had to be 'sealed' before going in the water, do you think the bronze age sailor have used fat of some kind.

going slightly off topic todays event reminded me of reading an article on the annual varsity boat race due to be held that day.
must have been in the eighties and the chap went on to say what a boring event it was for most and if a boat sank he would be biting the carpet with laughter.
i didn't take much notice and later turned the news on to see the cambridge crew valiantly trying keep their dignity whilst the thames was lapping around their upper torsos.
i was actually hurting with laughter.

We passed him on the seafront hurrying away, don't know if it's significant but he had just seen the brass band getting their instruments out

i must admit disappearing early there was nothing going on or any indication that the boat was on its way.
even the band were sitting around not knowing what to do.
well done with the photos ted, especially the one with brian trying to eat the boat.
