interesting piece on meridian tonight about a project to recreate a half size replica of the boat using tools similar to that would have been used by the original builders.
the idea being that it spends about 6 months each in belgium, france and here until the projects ends.
the work is being done each saturday outside the discovery centre for us all to see.

This looks a very interesting project, it's something that I wouldn't mind being involved with and the added advantage of getting wet as well

Ought to be interesting given it is costing European Tax Payers €1.9m in Interreg III funding

still seems to be interreg dosh washing about in these austere times, good to see some coming partly our way.
i would hazard a guess that the canterbury archeological trust have someone that is adept at tapping into it and knows how to fill in the application form.

If you all remember the idea last year of turning this area into a community garden, this is why it didn't happen. Hopefully it will be in full swing for the tourist season and will have more publicity and will attract a lot more visitors.
I helped show a group of retired academics from Canterbury around some of our highlights from the town hall to the museum last autumn, arranged by Linda Keen, DDC councillor for Aylesham and guided by Pat Sheratt on behalf of the Dover Society. They were amazed at what we had to offer but which they knew little about, even living so close.

Did this in the Express last year. It's £1.7 mill and the boat will have a sea trial in Dover harbour in May. It's a brilliant project and Dover is providing the centre piece of the touring exhibition. Something positive

i raised the issue of the community garden on here a couple of months back and was told that plans were ongoing.
we had those pictures of the town clerk, mayor et al on site yet kathy and ray are saying that it has long been known that the boat building would take place there.

found out about the building about a week after i did the bit on the community garden and then did the front page about the boat. The building will be done by May so the garden could still go there after

From Facebook -
"A unique opportunity has arisen to see the replica of the Bronze Age Boat being made on the Roman Lawn (between the Roman Painted House and the Dover Discovery Centre). The work will be able to be viewed by the public between 10am and 3pm this Saturday the 10th of March"

Went to see the half size replica under construction yesterday, together with my granddaughter Nicole. Treated to a very interesting description of the process by Damian, seen in the first couple of photos. The last three photos show the size of logs which would be used to construct a full size boat.

A few wood chippings there. Good to see the pictures Ed and your grand daughter Nicole enjoying it all. Will be certainly worth a picture or two if/when it launches in May...now that will be fascinating.
