I saw this mayoral event on Newsnight last night and Im afraid to say it was totally shambolic and basically incoherent. Jeremy Paxman chaired, but not well. JP is a famed interviewer but handling a debate is probably not his forte and his contributors talked incessantly over each other, interrupting at will...so nobody could finish a sentence.
The four taking part were Jenny Jones of the Greens. Boris Johnson Conservative Mayor, Ken Livingstone Labour former Mayor, and Brian Paddick one time high ranking police officer and now Liberal candidate.
Here are pictures of the two main protaganists. Boris and Ken...I do also have pictures of the other two just in case there is a huge unprecedented public outcry for their inclusion..
The programme was shambolic as I said, of little value to man or beast. Boris waffled on, Ken interrupted. Ken waffled on and Boris interrupted..but Boris of course never shuts up. The other two tried to get in edgeways..."Can I get a word in edgeways" said Brian Paddick but nobody was too bothered. The Green woman said a few things but nothing of note..so there we have it. All bewildering. All sorts of unconfirmed statistics were thrown into the air to make a case but as the viewer cannot confirm a mid air statistic it soon became totally pointless. You've reduced spending by 6% and Ive increased it by 11%..no I did it by 9% and you cut it by 3%..this kind of thing...while Paxman looked on with his arched brow in full quizzical mode.
In the end I was glad when it stopped as it was, in the common vernacular,
"doin my ed in!!"
The only statistic that seemed to emerge that was tangible was that Boris has reduced Police Officers by 2000 since coming to power and 650 backroom staff. Police officers therefore now have to do the job of backroom staff. Boris on the other hand claims there were 1,000 more officers on the beat, the emphasis being 'on the beat'...a statistic juggle by Boris there as he didnt deny there were overall less Police Officers.
A few other stragglers were given 60 seconds airtime each at the end of the show...these included the BNP and UKIP. UKIP did seem to be a coming party at one time but they have slid back a long way...bumbling along the bottom but with an occasional bubble that promises hope but a bubble that bursts every time.
