It starts with simple things. I would never dare swear in front of my parents, even now, but if you go to a school these days the parents are worse than the children while standing around the playground. If I was caught getting up to something by the police when I was young I would have been marched home to my parents who would then thank the copper and punish me. These days the parents are more likely to berate the copper.
If the school put me in detention my parents would make sure I was there, and punished at home as well. These days detentions involve staying in during a break so as not to inconvenience the parents.
If I was sent to my room my parents meant it and I stayed there. These days the rooms have televisions, computer games, internet etc and the parents can't get the children out of them.
The one common thread here? Parents.
I love my children and want the best for them but they are not my "mates", they are not my "best friends", I do not want to go out with my son to meet girls or play in arcades. They are my children and I will do my best to teach them right from wrong. When I set a punishment they will stick to it, no matter how awkward it is for me. If I say they will not have new toys or comics for a set period as a punishment that is what will happen. And woe betide them if they ever think it is OK to swear in front of me, and I don't care what they can hear on television if I hear it on there while they are watching it gets turned off.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

cannot disagree with any of that, seems a problem of boundaries.
children usually like to know what they are, they will normally still try to cross them at some times.
the main point being that if they are caught then some sort of saction is imposed.
being sent bed early or denial of a normal treat does the trick usually.

It all boils down to these rioters not knowing the difference between what is right and what is wrong.
Society must look at itself and identify the causes-
An over-generous welfare state which shelters not only the needy but also the indolent.
An educational system that neither encourages excellence nor imposes discipline.
A political establishment which is afraid of challenging the status quo in a sufficiently radical manner.
We have arrived at a situation where the only commandment understood by many is the eleventh. 'Thou shalt not get caught'.
Over-population of which the main cause has to be excessive immigration.
A culture of political correctness which inhibits any challenge to the established order.

I think chris p has made some valid points,
no matter what background you come from peter, everyone knows the difference between right and wrong,
its a matter of choices

i disagree on that last bit keith, many people do not know the difference.
as an example i will have to go back to yesterday and the illegal fishing.
2 sets of young adults each with children, i went and stood next to the first adult male and stared at him from close range.
there should have been one of two reactions if he thought he was doing wrong, firstly to look sheepish or secondly to tell me to go away.
neither reaction.
i didn't bother with the second one, his dog didn't come across as over friendly.

Two youth workers with two entirely different opinions on TV today, I have paraphrased their responses.
No. 1 blamed virtually everything on homes having no money.
No 2. blamed the young of not knowing right from wrong and said they already have their designer gear and seemingly no shortage of money.
No 1 was white, no 2 was black, it is not surprising people find the situation difficult to deal with when even the professionals have such differing opinions.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Just shows that race and colour are irrelevant Jan, just badges of identity that people shelter behind.

Kensington Council have said that any council house tenants found guilty of looting/rioting will have to face the consequences which could lead to them being evicted.

we keep hearing this about council evictions, where do they then go to?
years ago i asked that question here, wrote to all the relevant authorities too about what happened to problem tenants that had been evicted.
never got anythig resembling a reply.
councils have a duty to house anyone homeless so all that can happen is that they are shifted around different areas.
Chris - right on mate! Parents can get it hideously wrong and even when we get it right the kids can still choose to behave differently. But with a loving home and a pair of warm parental arms to run into a rehabilitation has a better chance of success.

Good posting too Peter - no one has the balls to tackle this in any real and meaningful sense - tickle at the edges until it's no longer headline news.
Government of Law and Order ? Then let's see some.

Liam Bretherton, a serving paratrooper aged 20 who has served in Afghanistan, was among the mobs which trashed shops in Manchester on Tuesday.
He was in court accused of nicking a £1900 guitar. What a fool.

Everyone, and in particular Chris and Peter have made exceptionally good points. Some decent stuff has dropped out of the heart breakingly bad stuff, and a resurgence of community feelings and evidence of kindnesses are only two of them. It seems to have united many of us in our revulsion and desire to change things.

There is a desire to change things Bern - but how, is the big question/debate.
In the beginning of the debate, I put forward the idea that education was the key, then it seems that many rioters, arsonists and looters were quite well educated; it wasn't a racists things either as black and white were at it; male and female were just as bad, doing some really hideous things, also there were some from quite well-to-do families, so it wasn't class either.
Is it the excitement ? getting something for nothing ? doing something absolutely outrageous ? doing it purely because it is wrong ?
