#20, Barry, you have just found a point to agree on with the major trade unions- about the government being the servant, I mean.

I very much doubt the Trade Unions would agree with minimalising the government, they provide active support for big government intervention all the time, except of course when it comes to their own affairs then they want government to keep out.

Strange isn't it? We've had the world war 2, the cold war, incessant pleadings from politicians in the "free world" berating the likes of North Korea, Burma and China for their restrictions on privacy and free speech. We had Nick and David before they were elected promising a smaller state and an end to labour's plan to hold data on us all and yet here we are faced with yesterday's announcement on this issue.
I think that those who still believe that David Cameron has our best interests at heart had better check into the reality clinic. Oh yes these deluded souls still exist bless them and even, laughably, believe that he is the one to extricate us from the economic mess we find ourselves in caused by the last bunch of muppets.
Having said that my guess is that most people are,
a: blissfully unaware of this story
b: blissfully ignorant of the true implications
c: couldn't give a damn anyway.
Ironically it was politicians in the mould of Cameron and those like him who caused the very dangers that we are supposed to be terrified of and are putting in place measures which are sure to make life in the UK even more intolerable.
And finally, as an aside, it seems that the government are reaching desperation point with their 1 billion (yep that's right 1 billion) pounds prize for any herbert who can invent carbon capture and storage.
I'm announcing today an even bigger prize for anyone who can bring me the head of a unicorn. I'll give the winner £2 billion.

Very entertaining post there Philip. Much of what you say is true..messrs Cameron and Clegg did oppose the Labour move on data collection/intrusion a while back amid much huffing and puffing and faux indignation. It is a much easier life in opposition, when you can oppose for the sake of it, once in power the grim reality hits home...and what appeared like principle before makes way for practicality.
Yes indeed I heard this on the radio this morning re the Carbon Capture initiative. £1,000,000,000 ( did I get enough zeros there ) but just in case I failed with the zeros, yes £1billion is available to anyone who figures out how to do it. It seems the idea is to put the carbon in a pipe and bury it under the North Sea..heavens! The search for this was also tried by the last government, several companies stepped up to the plate but none could master it. So there we are...how to get rich quick.
If someone succeeds then we can burn fossil fuels at will without any danger of pollution. Thats the idea.

Plant more trees.
Where do I claim?

Indeed Paul - only one slight snag with this impossible invention, actually two.
Actually lots more but let's concentrate on the two.
Where on earth are we going to dump this dangerous carbon dioxide? You know the stuff you exhale and trees absolutely love. In lead lined tanks three miles down?
Also it would require at least half the energy again in order to put this pipe dream idea in place - at least half the energy if not more.
Sorry but this is getting really desperate now when the government are putting up this prize instead of reading up on the science and admitting they got it wrong. Anyway back to the surveillance state:
It seems that for some strange reason the government are in a rush to push this through as soon as possible. What are the reasons?
There is something really strange and probably malevolent going on.
Any ideas anyone?
£2 billion for the answer (providing you can produce a unicorn's head as well)

how many extra people would have to be employed to go through all the trivia of 50 million people?
would probably have to expand gchq by at least 10 times to house the staff.

So if I get 1 billion £, I can purchase an orchard in Kent!

Well if you come up with a peer reviewed and provable solution you can buy up endless orchards in Kent Alexander. Think bigger though, think vineyards in the wine growing regions of France. Hell no, think California, Australia.
Still back to the subject in hand. Howard's quite correct in pointing out how many more agents of the state would have to be employed to monitor all this traffic.
I've started to think that the world is one giant sound stage for a remake of the film Invasion of the bodysnatchers. With Nick Clegg giving his blessing to the idea there is something seriously wrong.
Seriously wrong.
Do the security services have something on the man for him to give in so quickly, so wholeheartedly?
As for Milliband he's done nothing to give anyone hope of any real opposition to the proposal with his miserable weasel words earlier today.
It's as if these muppets have seen the film The lives of others and consider it a training manual rather than a warning of the dangers of a more powerful state.

Must say that I am not comfortable with this either, its just another unnecessary intrusion into ordinary peoples lives. I can see the advantages it will have in helping with serious crime and indeed terrorism thus I guess helping to protect the public at large but knowing the full extent of our ordinary lives, being as it was on show, does make me feel somewhat uneasy.

We heard all about these self-same benefits with mobile surveillance, only to have Council's use their new powers to sneak about checking up on school applicants etc.

Courtesy....The Times....
Cameron hypocrisy puts Tories and Lib/Dems in turmoil....in opposition he was fiercely against the internet being
regulated.
Senior Tory MP`s are saying ...the government in opposition favoured liberty but now in power prefer Big Brother......
Clegg is trying to ressure his MP`s over the plans.....which is in conflict with their stance on Civil Liberties............
Tim Farron Lib/Dem president said ``we didn`t scrap the ID cards to promote creeping state surveillance......the state
mustn`tbe able to trace citizens at will...........
As Jan H says they are probably doing it anyway....but we do not want it wholesale and manipulated to the Nth degree..
.......anyway some smart arse will want to privatise it and Murdoch might put in a bid......................

Actually all this stems from the EU. It's all part of their internal security strategy and in time all states will adopt these measures.
Of course Cameron has no choice in the matter so he's doing his best to spin it that it's all good and nothing to worry about and a conservative initiative.
Of course Cleggy thinks every single edict from Europe is a brilliant thing so it's not surprising that he's going along with it.
This will pass through the house and there is absolutely nothing we can do about it.
