Years ago we would have been up in arms about this sort of thing..but it doesnt seem to happen anymore. Maybe there is a certain amount of resignation these days that all this kind of thing is inevitable...given the level of nasty evil-doers out there that need to be monitored. Monitoring has saved us from several attacks already and the general public are aware of this.
But I also wonder if we are tired of the likes of Ms Chakrabarti speaking up for us..you and me the affronted citizen. This voice of hers in all its weary earnestness is somehow self defeating. She rattles away on the BBC's Question Time every time, her place there courtesy of being the talking head of Liberty...what and who are Liberty is anyone's guess. Probably or possibly a self appointed talking shop, there supposedly to protect you and me the poor miserable beleaguered citizen...but did we ask for it? Every times there is such an affront up she pops with a quote..even now in the latest link above.

Yea, right PaulB. Ruddy do-gooders. Who needs 'em?
-Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures (TPIMs) allow for indefinite house arrest for people suspected of terrorism. Under the TPIMs regime you might never know the accusation against you and never have the chance to clear your name...

this will turn an already discontented bunch of back benchers into overdrive, they are already unhappy with the direction of the leadership.
david davies has already stated his opposition which will be seen as a challenge to dave.

I'm not happy with it either and I think anyone that really wants to will get round it anyway. There are ways of anonymizing web surfing and email can be encrypted.

Howard, as I've said elsewhere, David Davis is 22/1 and no 8 in the list to be next Conservative leader according to William Hill - good for a punt now before the odds drop if you're a betting man.
And he's from oop North

Colin, you can't completely anonymise web surfing, there's always a record even if hard to trace otherwise it wouldn't work. Same with mobile phones, it's all digital information that has to be saved in a cache somewhere to work.
Of course it could be a ploy to get us to accept hose 60p or more first class stamps, no record of what's in the envelope there!

those odds seem about right ray, davis is popular with the grass roots and activists like yourself, barry and peter but would be an electoral liability.

Am I the only one on here that does not mind about this if it helps catch the baddies, my emails are dead boring anyway.

But where do you draw the line over invasion of privacy Jan? You also assume that we will always have a benign government. We are not immune to a future Hitler or Stalin misusing technology to oppress people. What also about illegal access to the information?
Your emails may be dead boring, as most of mine are, but this is about more than you and I.

If we have a Hitler or Stalin type in the future this and worse will happen regardless of legalities. I suspect this invasion of privacy has been happening (by MI5 or similar body) already on the quiet since hacking was invented.

Jan - you place too much trust in government with the 'I have nothing to hide' attitude. We should never make things easy for governments, that is the point. They must remain our servant and kept in their place, minimalised.
