It was good to see such a large turnout from the town, every year the number of veterans seem less so it is important to remember, the sun shone thankfully but it did seem to catch some out, I do hope that thoses that felt unwell are ok, its always a very proud thing for me to do every year, as my grandfather was Royal artiliary and my father was a Buff.

We stood for the two minutes silence among the Roman remains at Fishbourne Roman Palace.

I have long felt that we should make November 11th a Bank Holiday as it is in many countries on the European mainland. It would provide a lasting memorial to those who have given their lives and keep those who are still prepared to give their lives in the forefront of our minds.
I have discovered a petition on the Downing Street website and, should anyone wish to support this, the link is:

One big problem Mark, in this country bank holidays are on a Monday so there is a long weekend.

I would prefer Trafalgar Day, October 21st to be a Bank Holiday, or at least the nearest Monday to it. We should drop the May Day one and replace it with this as we have plenty of these in the spring and none in the Autumn. Better chance of reasonable weather in October than November.

Barry
Trafalgar Day seems an outdated concept, celebrating war. A national day/holiday on November 11th however would commemorate those lives sacrificed in all conflicts since the First World War in the hope that, through remembrance, political rather than militaristic action might take hold in the future. In that way we could truly say that we are honouring the dead.

I think marking the 11th itself is the significance of this though when it falls on a weekend the weekday nearest could be called.

I agree with BarryW; Trafalgar Day is a good day to celebrate - not so much war as a British Victory and a defining one at that. Celebrates our great navy and naval officers too.

i would prefer any new public holiday to be in june or july, currently we have two in april, two in may then nothing all summer until the last monday in august.
with armistice day, services are always held on a sunday anyway and will continue to do so whether or not we have a day off on the 11th.
I have my fingers crossed for a holiday when Mrs T goes.......but keep that to yourself.

The services could be moved to the 11th which would be more appropriate and it would avoid the doubling up of silences as happens now (on the 11th and on the Sunday). Sundays were probably designated to avoid people having time off work and messing up the economy!
However, the 11th should be an international day of reflection when we commemorate the (approximately) 8.5 MILLION who died as a result of the First World War, the 61 MILLION who died as a result of the Second World War and the 41 MILLION who have died in wars since 1945.

I have to disagree we have enough public holidays in the spring and summer, one at the beginning of November or the end of October would be much better. Armistice Bank Holiday would give people the chance to visit distant graves of loved ones or service memorials without having to rush home for work on Monday.
