St Marys Passage is another favourite spot, they sit around the Graves and use the Tomb like a Bar.A friend of mine works nearby. He says the Police have been called many times as some shoppers are frightened to walk past them.It usually ends with just one Community Warden turning up with little else done. They skulk away only to regroup again sometimes just a few hours later.

There seems an air of acceptance that you just have to accept that this is a way of life, it is not. Police based in the Town in reasonable numbers could disrupt the anti social behaviour and clean the area up, not a one off operation but regular Police patrols dedicated to the Town, of course there is a cost but one well worth paying in my opinion.

Pauline in #20 just about sums up my feelings, whatever happened to being nicked for being drunk and disorderly. It now seems quite acceptable by our law keepers to just let these drunks get on with it, I guess there is so much paper work involved for the police to get involved.
There have always been drunks around but I do not remember seeing them in town centres when I was young or even middle-aged. How about a nice covered bench for them right outside the police station.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

somerfield applied for that licence to accommodate ferry workers coming off shift, they are very particular who they sell alcohol to - certainly not to street drinkers.

Spot on Brian, get the Police Station open get the cells open get dedicated Dover police officers working from there with local knowledge, Dover will be a better Town for it with a better quality of life.

Howard, dear Howard,
It is not the 'why' or the 'how' that makes this a matter of interest to the current discussion. It is that the member (RossM) began that thread, way back when, to bring up the extra-mural quaffing, and the general distaste thereof.
I was trying to bring together instances over the years to show how much the fact of public drunkenness is of general concern to residents. I do this in the light of the recent 'advances' made by authorities locally. [see this site's News page]
Clearly, a majority of locals want to see the matter realistically addressed, albeit that they plead for a particular 'symptom' to be made the priority:"Get the buggers off our streets!"
While I am aware that no cure is being sought, or called for, only faint-hearted attempts at addressing this issue do not satisfy the residents. Fool that I am, I imagine that those in authority may hear of the views expressed here.
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Rather than bring the other thread up, here is the link to the BBC story of how this issue is being tackled in Ipswich...

Totally agree there is a lack of Police in the town these days and it would deter this sort of behaviour. But where would these people be pushed to? Would we be moaning as they are pushed to our home areas? Looking at dealing with these people's lifestyles I believe is more important than locking them up when lets face it, they learn nothing from.
More importantly I would like to add that for every one of these incidents there are probably two more pleasing ones for tourists. I for one will always stop and ask if tourists look lost. I have even given two young gals a lift to st Margrets holiday camp before after they booked it thinking it was within walking distance of Dover!

Sorry Helen, I have run out of sympathy for drink and drug abusers. Unless the person themselves wants a different way of life, I don't believe you can 'look at dealing with these peoples lifestyles', nor would they thank you for our interference. There are rehabilitation opportunities for anyone serious about change. I'm sure you are all aware that when the new Flat Rate Pension comes in, existing pensioners will be excluded. Not only is this shameful and discrimatory but the cost of including them would be the SAME as benefits currently paid to alcohol and drug abusers. Having read the comment re: giving two young girls a lift, my husband reckons he would be hard pushed to pick up a fella let alone young girls. A sad reflection of the times in which we live.

i have little time for them, lifestyle choice is ok when it doesn't impinge on other people. i don't see why they have to drink or snort something in public when they have the privacy of their own home.
there was seating in mill road/lane at one time, had to be taken away as empty cans and bottles were just dropped there despite a bin being close by.

Quite so Pauline- but this is what is happening right across the UK. The current system of government with all its preachings and austerity cuts do not take these idiots into account- and crime/anti social behaviour chugs on regardless with no risk of apprehension or effective legislation. Then there are those who would say you are being judgemental and would describe these louts as the product of the society which every one of us has had a hand in creating.
So what is the solution -throw them all in prison? Nah that would cost a fortune and create even more drunken idiots.
Disappear them? Well I can't really see Himmler being allowed to stalk the streets of Dover...
The Answer- localism . New local laws- local policemen, local taxation, local transport, local control of benefits, local power generation, local dealing with local idiots.
The green shoots of localism are appearing in Dover now. Everything must be done to nurture, fettle and refine them.
Idealistic? why not?
Never give up...

Richard, it sounds very like a French village I lived in some years ago. Worked very well. Idealistic? We've nothing to lose....

let's hope this is a genuine initiative and not another attempt to be seen doing something for a week or so.

All these things will not work
We need laws to remove suffers of these illnesses to places where drugs and alcohol do not exist
We have small islands of the uk. Unoccupied
Accommodation camps should be built for people to have a time free from there addictions to have the necessary time to reset there life's
The mental hospital that where shut down under Thatcher need to reopen to deal with the fact we have mentally sick people walking the streets
