I'm not bothered really if it were beef or horse as long as it were labeled as such. What annoys me is the fact that HMG keeps saying that it's "safe". How can they know that if there is no traceability on the horse, apart that is from winning the two thirty at Deauville.
Mind you I have been walking faster lately.

The public seem very divided on this issue. Perhaps the Telegraph should commission a Gallop Poll.

Surely it wouldn't have been a winner, but the loser that would ended up in those food-stuffs ?

The Mail reports:
"Consumer Affairs Minister Benoit Hamon said an investigation had found that the horse meat originated in Romania."

From the Huffington Post:
"DUBLIN — Ireland's government announced Monday that DNA testing has confirmed that Polish meat offcuts imported into Ireland and labeled as beef actually contain up to 75 percent horsemeat."

Hold your nose, get a bowl ready, you'll need it:
(it's coming , ready... well here goes):
"The Polish product was labeled as beef offcuts - slaughterhouse leftovers - that the Irish plants used as cheap filler material in budget-priced burgers."
So now you know whether there is any "meat" at all in these erm BURGERS
Well, that's what we get in return from Poland!

Time to accent the positive...
As horse meat costs about 50% less than 'beef'. The time is right for frozen horse mince to be widely available.
If nothing else this might encourage people to cook from scratch.

retail analysts say that this is positive news for the traditional high street butchers who know the source of their meat.

The other day Rooks sold us some Kentish steak mincemeat.
It appears more expensive at first glance, but when you calculate how many lasagnes could be made from it, it works out not at all more expensive than supermarket lasagne.
The difference being, it's prime local meat, we know where it comes from, it is within the norm of the carbon footprint, and is not a pile of leftovers coming from the other end of the EU.
That's why I buy local.

Me too, but Cappers in the Charlton centre is my butcher. Excellent value and excellent service, most importantly damn good meat.
