Lots of diggers and workmen there at the moment. Anyone know what's happening?

I heard it was going to be a drive-in KFC but that could be just rumour as other shops were also mentioned.

The chap who holds the franchise for McD in Biggin Street and Whitfield recently announced that he was moving on, could be some connection.

I would have thought B&M is the sort of store/shop that could have drawn trade into town, DITZ site, rather than out of it.

Thanks.
I remember that KFC were opening somewhere in Whitfield.
Never heard of B&M Stores.

I wonder if it's a coincidence that Iceland are in the picture in Ray's link?

B&M are a bit of a cross between Poundstretcher and The Range. Budget home, food and seasonal goods. I think it will be a useful addition. It would have been good in the St James development, but I suspect they want a larger floor area than is available there.

Must admit I had never heard of B and M until now, what future for Iceland's Dover town shop if they open up at Whitfield?

It would be a shame if they did move but I would have thought Iceland would do more trade up at Whitfield as there is less competition, Farm Foods must have hit their trade in the town.

'Farm Foods' must be the biggest misnomer in the retail industry. 'Factory Foods' would be more accurate.

A major investment into Whitfield which I would have thought makes DTIZ even more unsustainable. Would make more sense for Cineworld to be sited there.

B&M are not rivals for Iceland or Farm Foods. They don't do frozen food and very little chilled. There food is mainly packet, tins, jars. Lots of non food, cleaning products, toiletries etc.

Very positive news for investment in Dover. Whitfield and St James will be two very different offers. Developers of St James reported at this week's pubic inquiry that 52% of floorspace exchanged or under offer and expressed confidence that 70% will be pre-let by year-end.
I understand Iceland have two stores in Canterbury so there is a precedent for similar developments.

If Iceland do close the one in the town centre it will be a blow to many without cars as the bus stop directly outside offers services to almost everywhere.

Kevin, 70% pre-let of land that is still to be determined whether the land can be bought compulsory or not is nothing to be proud of. Yes Whitfield and St James are very different, Whitfield will appeal to the wider district and will have plenty of free parking. St James will have paid for parking and struggle to attract the appeal of the wider district. Obviously I am presuming we will still be driving cars post 2020.

As I said before then, Jack, we'll have to wait and see.
