At 1800 this evening there will be a workshop chaired by the Bishop of Dover at Cruise Terminal 2. All are welcome, so I really hope that as many as can make it will do so and not just the usual faces. This fund will be for Dover and Dovorians should have the greatest say over how it is deployed and on what type of projects. If Dover folk don't come along to the workshops, then the fund deployment will be decided by those who are at the workshop.
These are new and real changes at the port and the beginning of the fulfillment of the Minister's statement back in April. Let's seize the opportunity to ensure that Dover wins and the long and painful decline is first arrested and then, over time reversed.

It's twenty five years ago today since the Deal bombing when 11 young men lost their lives. There will be beating retreat at Deal Castle tonight.Private memorial service has just been held.
What a shame that the Dover event could not have been rearranged.September 22nd 1989 is a date many will recall.
The Deal bombing will never be forgotten.

Entirely agree Sue. Today is a very important date for so many in Deal, the emergency services and the armed forces. What a very inappropriate date and time to have this community fund event.

I don't see a conflict between the two events and I'm sure there are very few who would be torn between the two. Apart from politicians of course, who 'need to be seen' at the commemoration, but also want to stick their oar in at the community fund workshop.

The cruise terminal is a very long walk from the town, pity it is not held in a more central point.

Yes, I would have thought the town hall was more convenient; but of course CT2 is DHB territory and parking is not a problem there.

Not at all Peter.I shall be at Deal with Cllr Watkins.DDC are often accused of not taking an interest in Dover.I would have used public Transport and attended as a member of Jo Public..!as District Chairman I have to make the right decision.Even I can't be in two places at once.I would have been interested in hearing the views of Dover people.

Howard almost any important event is arranged with car drivers in mind those without are rarely given a second thought.
Unfortunately we live in a car driven society, for example I can only visit the sea front if a family member drives me and the same goes for Samphire Hoe.

#5 ouch! I am sure that some politicians have hearts... Today is a very important day and should be remembered and Councillors should attend the ceremony. I'n my mind they would be disrespectful if they didn't

Chrissi, I agree wholeheartedly, and it would be best for Dover if the politicians butted out of the most important decisions in Dover. But the bombing memorial is a Deal thing, best left respectfully to those of Deal and those of the RM and their families who have private and personal reasons to remember the outrage. If I were to attend the memorial service or the beating of the retreat I would feel as if I were attending the funeral of a stranger and intruding on private grief.
Having said that, obviously those in positions of civic responsibility ought to be there, leading the tributes.

Politicians should butt out of most things, there's too many of them at too many levels. We need less govt and less interference.

Yes quite, David. They should spend their time paying their respects to the dead. Then they can't do much harm.
I'm going to print off your #12. If you get elected I'm going to frame it.

Please do Peter, politicians need to stop interfering in people's lives, they're there to serve.

Should David get elected make sure he signs it prior to the framing Peter.

My complaint with the date was not because politicians could not attend but people who might actually do some good with the funding. I note Neil says the fund should be for Dovorians only which is all well and good but Charlie Elphicke and DHB have previously said this funding is for the district.
If it is not then there needs to be clarification. There is already far too much animosity in the district as there is!

Jack, not quite what I said - "Dover and Dovorians should have the greatest say" is not the same as saying that it is solely for Dover and Dovorians.
My own view is that the fund should have a focus on Dover and on projects which are of direct benefit to Dover, especially at the outset, to begin to try and offset the 7 million plus vehicles which trundle across the seafront every year on their way to the port (no other town or village in the district has this kind of inconvenience), but that it should not be exclusive to Dover.

Neil, I hope when you're appointed you ensure that local people are given the opportunity to apply for jobs in the Port.
