A good question is what the role of the Mayor other than ceremonial, Roger wants to carry on in the same vein as the present incumbent but I think the Mayor should be visiting school prize givings and encourage/promote local voluntary groups. Chris Precious was excellent at that during his tenure and in my view the best Mayor since I moved here.

If we must have such an archaic institution I agree Chris was excellent.

It is archaic, Jan. Running a google search on "mayor of Dover" is a salutary experience in understanding what the world outside our town will make of the role. As the Cap'n says, the Town Council is a fairly powerless body save for allotments and toilets. If tradition decrees that we must preserve this unnecessary drain on taxpayer's money, then let's make the mayor's role purely ceremonial. The recent Zeebrugge raid ceremony was a great success but I know of one local ex-serviceman who was deterred by the presence of certain "dignitaries" whose life experience could not be further removed from that of the military.

Hi Roger
I will attempt to end here as I realise your bitter over others letting you down.
I did vote for callum as a conservative as a youngster for a different outlook
one freemason did abstain on callums vote
but there was some strange voting all round as you pointed out Roger.
There has been a number of good mayors over the years

For what it's worth I understood it was a ceremonial role .During my tenure as Chairman of DDC it was purely Civic.I t was non political and I never had to,use my casting vote once .The political side of the Council was led by the Leader. Chris did a lot of visits etc to schools .In four years I visited twenty six schools and twenty eight Parish Councils .I found these visits very interesting and I saw it as a great opportunity to visit all parts of the District ,indeed i made many friends over those years.Always lovely to meet people. The children were always of great interest to me .Once you have the chain on politics are cast aside.

As the 3 parties regroup it looks more likely that Labour will take stronger control of DTC
leading up to the next elections
quite a few of the Tories/indies likely to be wiped out.
I feel the tories/indies had a lost opportunity gaining control and co opting 6 of there own to have an inbuilt big majority slowly fell apart.
its a shame really because the move was to keep labour out
I now look to Labour are they going to be democratic?, what changes will they make?
going to be an interesting last 15 months for me
Could I thank those in my wards and other wards who like my regular ward updates, I try to communicate with people in the ward as many ways as possible, thank you all.

Why would I ?
I only vote for anyone I feel will make a difference
I have only been on DTC since Oct but been able to study the present dismantled tory/indy administration, not over inspiring
All I can hope is Labour believes a little more in democracy.
One can only hope
I'm in the best position really no party to tell me what to do/say or how to vote
no interest in having a chain round my neck
or chairing any committee
so no one has a hold on me

#92 That would be a great vote if you want the Farthingloe valley to covered in luxury homes by a company in desperate hock to the Israeli discount bank. It takes a rare level of either incompetence or party political bias to be picked out in a judgment by m'learned friends. Hey ho. Who cares? Tory local politics, eh?

but once people could vote against him they did
Still back on the Mayor its a wait and see if anything improves

Just caught up on this one. Re #95 the councillor to whom I was referring was mentioned in the High Court judgment in the case between CPRE and DDC as having failed to understand the due dilligence required of a planning committee member. The fact that this discussion refers to a DTC issue (specifically the mayoralty) is neither here or there. It's a question of personal judgment. I'm well aware of the ins and outs of the planning process.

Indeed Ray
Quite a good campaign took place against DDC and the way they and developers wished to move forward.
With correct campaigning these types of issues can be highlighted and fought for
thankfully as an individual on DTC I can hold the 3 parties to account

The whole episode is a lamentable one for DDC, regardless of what one might think of the merits or otherwise of the development. From incompetent district councillors to ludicrous PR guff from our MP about affordable housing for Dover youngsters, it has been a sorry episode from start to finish. I remember reading even more nonsense on this forum about the Supreme Court's rejection being as a result of an unavoidable administrative oversight and how the rest of local government would have to revise its procedures as a result. I won't mention the name of the poster. It is a planning disgrace worthy of inclusion in Private Eye. And, of course, donations to the local Tories had nothing to do with it.
