The BMA's head of GPs is to attack plans to put out-of-hours care back into the hands of family doctors.
The growing row between the government and doctors will get worse when the leader of Britain's GPs accuses
the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, of "spouting rubbish" and rejects his demand that family doctors take
back responsibility for out-of-hours care.
Dr Laurence Buckman, the chair of the British Medical Association's GPs committee - which represents the
UK's 40,000 GPs - is to launch a sustained personal assault on Hunt over his "denigration" of GPs and his
blaming of them for the growing crisis in A&E care.
Buckman's speech, to Thursday's annual conference of the BMA's local medical committees (GP branches),
will highlight the increasingly vocal unease about Hunt's approach felt by the BMA and the medical royal

Doctors at BMA conference vote almost unanimously against proposal to place them back on call
at evenings and weekends
Secretary of state for health Jeremy Hunt called the 2004 move to relieve GPs of responsibility for
out-of-hours care 'an historic mistake'.
GPs yesterday overwhelmingly reiterated their opposition to taking back responsibility for providing
out-of-hours care, with some predicting that many older family doctors would quit if that was imposed on them.
About 400 delegates representing Britain's 40,000 GPs almost unanimously rejected a call at a
British Medical Association conference for family doctors in England to once again become responsible
for looking after ill patients overnight and at weekends, as they were until 2004.
The vote, at the annual conference of the BMA's local medical committees (GP branches), came after
the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, was reported to want GPs to go back to the earlier arrangement.
Dr Richard Vautrey, deputy chairman of the doctors' union's GP committee, said: "There was a very strong
view that this would be the last straw for large numbers of GPs, if they were forced to become the provider

, it could soon be a grim reality. So let's raise an outcry as quickly as possible and push them
to drop the idea immediately.

Jeremy Hunt will be watching the public's reaction carefully. He is an ambitious politician with an
eye on his own popularity. If he sees a huge petition growing fast, he'll realise this is damaging his
ratings. So if enough of us sign, we could play a key role in getting this idea dropped.
Being able to visit the family doctor when we need it is a bedrock of a decent health system. GPs
are often our first port of call when we're ill. [3] Limiting access to GPs could mean a dangerous
illness is left undetected until it's too late - unless of course you've got private medical insurance...
But this isn't just about GPs. This is about a principle at the heart of our battle to protect the NHS.
Since the NHS was created, everyone in Britain has been able to rely on visiting a doctor as often
as we need to. Limiting access would undermine the NHS at its very foundations. So let's send
the Conservatives a strong message: drop this terrible idea.

It is recognised that the NHS is under increasing pressure
NHS hospitals were forced to shut their doors to ambulances on more than 350 occasions last year
because they were too full to cope with more emergency patients.
The number of times ambulances had to be diverted to other hospitals because of overcrowding
in A&E jumped by 24 per cent over the winter months in the year to April.
Over the recent Bank Holiday weekend, the A&E unit at Royal Liverpool Hospital was forced to
shut as it reached its full capacity on both Sunday and Monday.
Other hospitals to have suffered closures over the last month include Romford, Waltham Forest,

30 May 2013 11:55231527Not just population growth also problems with GPs either not available or can't get an appointment plus people moving around so often they do not even get to register with a GP.-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Well paid GP's are rfusing to do out of hours when asked
and often its not a nice place to visitALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS - 30 May 2013 12:56231535Keith, I assume that you posting on here you are not working today, whereas your doctor is probably working a long day 6 days per week. Of course they are well paid, they save lives, they are highly skilled in what they do.
Out of hours in this area is controlled by South East Health a private Company, they recruit out of hours doctors, please before you post get your facts straight. - 30 May 2013 13:02231538i would rather my g.p do a 9 till 5 job so that his/her mind is clear and focused, the old days of them being called out at 2 am because someone has a hangover are long gone, hopefully for ever.
