That's the first time you have ever paid me a compliment Howard. I see my job as keeping politicians on their toes and boring them stiff with my opinions.

# 1204...........One sided only............
NHS hospitals in bid to treat far more private patients
Healthcare trusts seek big increase in income from private patients,
*********** raising fears of two-tier service ****************
Great Ormond Street hospital has budgeted a 34% rise in private patient
income.
Hospitals are seeking a radical increase in revenue from the treatment of
private patients as their budgets come under pressure from the needs of
an ageing population, according to new figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act.

Like the benefits system the NHS has issues, we have to decide do we go down the conservative route of dismantling the NHS and running via private companies probably for profit, or do we make it an updated NHS one to be proud of, but also not an industry that can only be used by those that could afford to use it.
Of course I have given views before on all of this, and i'm no expert but the above should be a starting point.
We shouldn't have a 2 tier system.
Of course in reality whilst everybody expects every facility in every hospital, it just could not be afforded, services will have to be put in some hospitals, and some people may have to travel, but on the travel side, those that don't have access to transport should have an adequate service provided to get them to/from the hospital.
Bringing the matron back to have full control like the days of old would give some sense of bringing a lot of things together, and not having outside private caterers who provide poor quality cheap meals and have little care for the patient and more on profit.
Acomplete restructure of the hospitals top down needs to be in place, taking out many managers/administrators that are not required and instead get people on the coal face so to speak(sorry mentioning that word barryw lol)
People need to realise they have been hoodwinked by all parties over the Dover so called hospital, probably something very much scaled down will eventualy in place but not one that the general public are expecting.
Just pumping money into the NHS isn't the answer but to restucture in a way to benefit(sorry to mention that word, barryw, david, roger, lol) the patient is the way forward.
Making the NHS truely accountable is also a way forward.
When consultation is to take place, make it meaningfull or don't bother at all.
The fiasco over Buckland and future East Kent hospitals has to be one of the worst consultations ever to take place in Dover
sadly the guy supposed to push for Dover sat back whilst others push the case for Canterbury/thanet.
In so many instances Dover losing out, noy just on this issue, but in general..
To be fair, Labour hasn't realy been much better than the present lot on this issue.
Any way theres a few thoughts

Good post, Keith. I would agree with most of that.
But you mis-represent the Tory position, all that stuff about dismantling the NHS is just lefty hysterical propaganda.
Accountability is certainly a key issue; but you can't make an organisation accountable, only the people who run it.

Peter I don't disagree with your last line, but beg to differ on your support for the conservative line on the NHS
Your first line, I have all this before, but some posters choose not to recognise it

Keith, if you have evidence that the tories want to dismantle the NHS I'll apologise, but you haven't.

David you may be interested in an observer article(never refuted_) where after the election cabinet members and front bench tories were supporting the two books that came out; All tories i might add
Daniel Hannan had the support from Michael Gove, greg clark, jeremy hunt and robert goodhill.
where all agreed with hannans comments in his book direct democracy; where he stated the NHS fails to meet public expectation.
20 other tories supports hannans views .
Hannan followed this with another book (the plan; 12 months to renew Britain)
together with Douglas Carswell they called the NHS the NATIONAL SICKNESS SERVICE
Both books called for the NHS to be REPLACED by a new system of health provision,
People wouldpay money into a personal account which could be used to shop around for care.
from both public and private providers.
These relevations came to light following hannans appearance on U.S. T.V. In which he told fox news, that the NHS was a 60 year old mistake, and urged American's not to adopt a similar system.
It wasn't just the Labour party who told these Tory cabinet members they were wrong so did,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
