The state has an asset in the form of RBS & Lloyds Banking Group shares, as with all shares they can go up or down in value, however it is a reasonable expectation that as the 2 banks deal with the legacy issues and move back into profit the shares will appreciate in value. The key for the state is timing of the decision to sell, the method of sale etc.

Lloyds made a £300m loss before making provision for PPI mis-selling, which albeit is £500m down on last years results can be explained as they are undergoing a large reorganisation, which will cut 15,0000 staff, close 632 branches and withdraw from 50% of the countries it does business in currently. this reorganisation will ultimately see a much more efficient organisation.
Whilst I would rather see these types of institutions used to create jobs in small local communities through maintaining their branch network, I have to recognise that they are commercial organisations that must make a return for their shareholders in the medium to long term.

Icelands Financial Crisis........believed by a few to be Gordon Brown`s fault.....the failure of their three largest Banks
as resulted in the ex Conservative Prime Minister being charged and put on Trial for doing ``nothing` during the period
prior and during the collapse.....................once again the Bankers escape the blame...........................
However 200 other names are being considered for prosecution......lets hope the Bankers are included......
.and the idea catches on here in the UK.

LOL - some wild imaginings here.
Reg - as usual represents a very distorted and frankly ill-informed - or should that be more of a blind eye, perspective of financial matters.
Howard - of course, speaks of the wrong people as guilty parties as far as the UK is concerned.
As for court action I would love the government to be subject to the kind of judicial review procedures local councillors are subject to. Brown, of course, could never be able to repay the nation the damage done by his personal incompetence over gold alone, let alone everything else he was so stupid over.

That's when it comes to their own cash, Brian. When it comes to everyone else's cash that particular Scot was only too pleased to throw it down the drain.

I don't think he did it on purpose Barry, he was poorly advised. That's what happens when politicians think they know about highly specialised matters.

Ahhh actually Peter is recorded that he was advised correctly on gold by his Civil Servants (as he was on pensions reform matters among others) but he just dismissed the experts and did what he wanted to do regardless. I think it was a Labour insider called (Peter I think) Wyatt who first revealed this fact.
And that is the point.
Local councillors cannot be surcharged if a decision was wrong if it was on the advice of their professional advisers. If, however, they do not go with such advise ignore it and do the opposite, get it wrong and the taxpayers get a judicial review having lost them money, the councillors who voted go against the advice can get personally surcharged.
We need that kind of rule for government.

Perhaps Barry, but a little pointless given the sums involved and just smacks of revenge rather than anything else

True Ross - but it might make people like Brown think more carefully about idiotic decisions and actually listen to advice from professionals with the threat of bankruptcy if they don't.
