This quote is somewhat nutty: "Thirdly, she is concerned that some unscrupulous traders from outside the EU could exploit the lack of controls and get their goods across the border without tariffs or checks", since non-EU goods will either pass through existing controls, eg. at LHR and FXT, if coming direct, or will cross the EU under Transit. In short, no change there in either scenario.
However, I do share the rest of her concerns, especially given that trade with the EU will need to confirm to EU/Common Transit rules wef 1st January. I fail to understand why, having advocated Brexit and won a GE on the back of it, the Johnson administration is making such a hash of it.

Brexit was a bandwagon for Johnson (remember his two letters: one for, one against?); it was only once he thought he knew which bus would be first over the line that he jumped aboard. He's one of life's laodiceans. Except, he does have the hots for one thing: power, or, more precisely, the idea of power; he needs others to deal with its reality. Trouble is, they're not much good, either.

I doubt that many on here will be motivated to read it but I've attached the latest internal EU briefing paper on the 'negotiations'. Of course, the UK government won't publicise this. Good (maybe should be compulsory) reading for the 'no need to worry about all that - coronavirus will dwarf anything Brexit can throw at us' brigade.

...but not quite right about the "abolition" of Duty Frees (which had tariffs imposed on all but items consumed during the voyage): "When the single market came into being in January 1993, trade barriers across the bloc disappeared along with tariffs that many will remember as marking the end of duty-free alcohol and cigarettes."
I'm guessing that Ms Truss maybe didn't know about the purchase, unless she was reflecting the need for the facility at the start of 2020, not towards the back end of it.

The Manston solution was clearly farcical from the outset. Lots of rose-coloured glasses being worn too as far as this proposal goes, particularly from Councilor Bartlett, who clearly doesn't want to be seen to be rocking the Brexit boat.
Damian Green is far less sanguine and will be aware of the vast numbers of lorries which will lack required documentation. But who cares what he thinks? Very much Theresa's man and rather too fond of acts of onanism. Lots of fun between now and January 1st for sure.

I suspect outbound haulers will learn quickly; I just hope inbound ones do too for all our sakes.

I hope you are right, Button, for all Dovorians' sakes. The objective surely should be to keep disruption to a minimum, rather than pretend it won't happen.

What is going to happen to the juxtaposed controls as per the Le Touquet agreement after 1/1/21? I have seen nothing about this anywhere.

No change to the bilateral agreement, so far as I'm aware.

So trucks will still be checked at Calais/Coquelles for contraband and clandestines?

Yes, that's my understanding. Although I think I recall that, technically, contraband checking at Coquelles is limited to stuff that both sides regard as naughty and excludes fiscal commodities such as booze and fags. Certainly contraband checks on the ferry routes are post-crossing.

Known as either Farage's Garage or Project Fear Park. Take your pick.
