#100, you called them black, he didn't.

I can't remember the exact phrase used by Bob, but didn't someone ask him (while he was on holiday there) about the wildlife on the Isles of Scilly and he said there are bunnies over there but not the jungle kind as we were having in London (the riots were going on at this time).
So Martin, if "black" wasn't mentioned, does that make you a racist for saying that black people are jungle-bunnies ?
Shows just how silly the PC brigade has become.

Roger do not be so ridiculous, you know what context he mentioned it in and what he meant, do not patronise me by saying differently.

At the time he posted, I don't think any of us knew whether the perpetrators were black or white or a mixture. In fact many turned out to be white and some even middle-class.
I don't think anything said on this thread makes anyone a racist, Roger. But yet again people are getting offended on behalf of unknown others and using their umbrage as a stick to beat people with. If black people are offended, let them protest. For hand-wringing white people to do so on their behalf is highly patronising. That is why the PC culture of blame is so toxic and does more harm than good.

I am not offended by what he says on the basis take it from whence it came, I am annoyed that a man in public office makes comments that are intent on insulting and belittling people, some of his comments regarding young mums in his ward were disgraceful, but no doubt caused a chortle amongst his cronies.

#109, I don't know, David. But I'm sure he looks in from time to time.
#108, Martin, you are right to say that a man in public office should not say such things, but do you honestly think the gravity of his offence is such that he deserved to lose his career as a teacher for it? Plenty of teachers have criminal convictions for drink-driving yet are permitted to remain in their jobs.
I agree that his comments were ill-advised and bound to cause offence but feel that 1. it should not have cost him his job and 2. the Conservative party ought to have washed their hands of him completely as he has become a liability to them.

Peter, if you read Howard's link on the other thread, a tory MP is jumping up and down about UKIP being racist because of the billboards. That's his prerogative of course.
My point all along is about stones and greenhouses, UKIP are not racist, if tory councillors are going to make comments about jungle bunnies they deserve every bit of abuse they get.
It works both ways Peter

ilford south is a predominantly asian constituency and gapes always points out at election time how many visas he has worked on for "family members" to come into the country.
no surprise he is playing the race card on this one.

Positive discrimination in favour of particular ethnic groups is also racism.

Exactly Peter, there's no such thing as positive discrimination

the constituency is a marginal like here, at election time all the main parties grub around for the asian vote knowing if they can get community leaders on their side then the population will vote as they are told to.
