Youth cutbacks
- 12 July 2011 12:17114362kent county council has unveiled proposals that will result in the closure of 12 youth centres and 27 youth projects.
the idea is that voluntary organisations and charities can supply the services instead, this is expeted to lead to the loss of 64 permanent jobs and another 60 that work on specific projects.
this will mean a saving of about a million quid leaving just one youth hub in each of the 12 districts.
there are two threatened with closure in our district, lindwood and aylesham youth centres. - 12 July 2011 12:51114367I went to a highways meeting with KCC at Ashford also 30% cutbacks with 1-5th of the work force now gone,the cutbacks will start in Sep/this year,Where will the axe fall after I have done my report to the parishs councils tonight I will then tell you what i know.

What amazes me is the lack of co ordination on some of these projects.
Maybe best explained by way of example.
I run a club in town and pier, instead of the KCC outreach workers working with our club, they decide to do there own thing, many times we have had to pick up the pieces when they have gone.
We used to use the recreation ground, played many league games on this ground, one saturday morning at training we entered the gate to find the youth van had been there the day before, and gone onto the ground and ripped up part of the ground.
We could have given better advice as to where to park the van, saving us doing the repairs after they gone.
Of course we no longer use the ground due to the short sightedness of the planning dept.
once when down the sports centre helping to run the 5 a side league(with over 25 teams in the leagues) we took over 200 kids off the streets every friday.
this was recognised by the police,
Of course govts of all colours would rather do everything for nothing, but in reality both charities/volunteers are already at breaking point, and we could see even more volunteers leaving that sector through frustration and over workALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS - 12 July 2011 14:57114382keith makes a good couple of points here.
a) i remember the incident over the portakabin for the 5 a side fotballers total intransigence from the planning department. the police and public benefitted from when the kids were doing something productive.
b) the voluntary sector is at full stretch now they are mostly made up of retired people and some long term unemployed. the retirement age is rising and the government's intention is to get everyone back to work. put that together and it means that the number of volunteers will fall. - Ross Miller

SAD outlook on life and to much of a generalisation.
HOWARD;
We used the recreation ground in town and pier, not for 5 a side, but for 11 a side
in the registered east kent youth league playing clubs from across kent.
Sadly after much talking with the planning dept, and no movement from them, we gave up, and ended up at the sports centre concentrating on the 5 a side
where we ran 2 teams and still do.
we appear to be finding lots of obstacles these days to stop us operating(or trying to)
we held monthly bingo sessions in the church hall for some 5 years, we wanted to start it up again recently only to be told we need £3m insurance,
so we will look elswhere on that one.
but the club will continue because we believe in it, seeing the happiness on the kids faces and those at bingo, makes us determined to continue

He said he was driving past one of the centres due to close(Linwood) and he was astonished to see the place was having new double glazing fitted to every window. If this is true then the actions of someone at KCC should be construed as criminally incompetent.
