Received this from Kent Highways.
"Temporary Daytime Northbound Closure - A256 York Street, Dover - from 11 October 2011
The northbound carriageway of the A256 York Street, Dover will be closed for carriageway resurfacing, for a total of 5 weekdays.
These works are planned to be carried out from Tuesday 11 October until Friday 14 October inclusive and Monday 17 October 2011, between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm.
The road will be re-opened outside these times.
This only affects the northbound carriageway from the A20 York Street Roundabout heading towards Folkestone Road.
The alternative route is via the A20 Trunk Road to Courtwood Interchange then back along the B2011 Folkestone Road (road names detailed in attached Public Notice).
Durham Hill will be closed at the junction with York Street with a local diversion via North Military Road and South Military Road.
Maison Dieu Road will cease to be one-way for buses only, between the junctions with Castle Street and Pencester Road.
This is for the 7 days from 11 to 17 October inclusive and only applies to buses, with limited access to residents within this section of road.
Traffic from Dieu Stone Lane will need to turn left into Maison Dieu Road during this period.
The closure is to enable carriageway resurfacing to be carried out by KCC Highways.
Some delays are inevitable, and it is suggested that drivers consider using alternative routes for the duration of the works."
Sounds like a plan that was drawn up on a computer, rather than a visit to the actual sites - Maison Dieu Road as a two-way from Pencester to Castle Street ?
Can you imagine a truck or two going the normal way along Maison Dieu and a bus driving towards it, or trying to turn into Maison Dieu Road and then left into Pencester ?

Would it not have been far easier to make the other two lanes of York Street contra-flow?
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Chris, that would need the use of common sense which seems to have gone missing with the whole plan.

this was the scene at 10.30 a.m. dock bound traffic was blocking the roundabout leading to chaos.
best avoid if you can.
a word of warning, motorists are driving like nutters on south and north military road, in parts there are no footpaths.
very very dangerous around st martins battery.

Deep Joy.
It's manic outside my place as well, motorists taking the "short cut" along the terrace to no avail. As I've mentioned before, if they stay in London Road they have about 2½ minutes green light at Cherry Tree. From the Terrace it's only 20 seconds.
Note to motorists Don't take the short cut, it's bloody dangerous and TAKES LONGER!
Give me strength!

In the middle of that melee, parked on the central reservation at the beginning of York St, was a truck with Traffic Management' on it.

that amused me too, could only get pictures from inside a bus - the situation was a lot worse than seen here.

Which means the bus does run from Pencester unless the driver stops people getting on there.

I think the Whitfield bus comes from Aycliff to the Priory roundabout, stops in Worthington St, then turns left into Biggin St and left again into Priory St. Thus it does not go along Pencester Rd until it gets back from Whitfield again.

Thanks Peter when Brian said the stop nearest to M&S I automatically thought of the Pencester Road entrance.

From Pencester you can also get the 88 or 89 to Whitfield, both of which then go on up Sandwich Rd to the rest of Whitfield.
