07:4830166I have been speaking to the Play area/Leisure Manager at DDC and he was going to get back to me by the end of September so I'll chase him up.
Kent Highways are looking at a one-way system and yes indeed there was a very good response from a survey carried out in the affected roads, with just three people objecting to it.
The cost will be in the region of £18,500 and I understand it will have to be scheduled for budgeting too.
With regard to the buses being removed from Maxton, they (stagecoach) don't just conjure up brand-new low-floor buses from cupboard, there has to be a real and perceived need for them right across the country, not just one local authority or one bus company come to that.
I don't know who makes them (probably Mercedes ?), but I do know they are damn expensive, so lots of orders for them need to be placed.
Simply marching up and down the road and letter writing, is not enough; quality lobbying has to be made by the local authority, the County Councils and the many and various bus companies.
Like section 215, there has to be a political will, to successfully lobby.

stagecoach has plenty of low floor buses, they are not suitable for the area in question.
the old fashioned small ones do the job.

09:5830174By Rogers posting he under estimates the power of the people.
Sheila won't let this go, lets be clear, Kent county council, Dover District council, and Stagecoach have been aware of this problem for all ythe years the tories in control and beyond, its no new thing.
Sad that im now hearing that the buses presently going around maxton actuially have no problem negotiating the bottom of clarendon road!!
so what the excuse now?
Stagcoach never wanT this service,
fight will go on and i have fyull respect for sheila and her campaign
GO, GO, SHEILA

10:1230180I know the small buses can negotiate Clarendon Road etc Howard, but they are coming to the end of their life - I do believe there is an EU directive about it.
I'm sorry Keith, but one group of people in a ward of a District are not going to influence Stagecoach or a bus manufacturer; it needs proper high level lobbying.
Campaign by all means, but it needs more, much more.

10:1830182I have alreadty stated they are coming to the end of a useful life .People wonder why the posts are less on Here .With Yadda yadda etc.I have meanigful talks with Stagecoach so I do know my facts .
The small buses are the only ones who can get round Clarendon .They tried recently to drive a new bus there and it was not feasible the same as a small bus is now used for Pilgrims Way .

10:4830185If small bus's are needed for certain areas, then surely Stagecoach has a moral obligation to ensure all areas of the district are catered for, by all means go for the larger bus's but also get a small one as well, for the difficult areas, surely if Pilgrims way and Clarendon are difficult, these could be incorporated into one run, with one small bus, the money would soon be recuperated, hope to get people power working on this

13:3630190Thery are Sheila .Temple Ewell ,Pilgrims Way ,Market Square out to Clarendon and Maxton .A small team of drivers cover this service .For awhile Pilgrims Way was not served ,power of the people got the route reinstated using a small bus .The only problem no wheelechairs accomodated .

13:5230193It isn't just a moral obligation, it is business sense: take the temperature of the local needs, check out the demographics, supply the service that meets the need. Bingo!

15:3230196you are quite right about the wheelchair access susan, also a lot of older peoplel have mobility difficulties.
however, they would much prefer to climb the step on the smaller buses than have no bus at all.

19:2030206But if there is no manufacturer making these small low-floor buses, you can't conjure them up out of the blue can you ?
We all known there is a need, but there also must be a demand - from bus companies, local authorities and possibly County Councils from all over the country.
A small bus with wheelchair access, will have very few seats; even the big buses have very few seats and with the end of the life for the normal small buses and no one shouting at the manufacturers to supply new small low-floor buses, something has to be done - at a high level.

brand new mini buses go past my house all day and every day.
age concern run them as do the taxi companies around here.
i have run a check and all over the country, buses the size of the maxton special are everywhere.
a company the size of stagecoach(worldwide coverage) could quite easily purchase as many as they like from a supplier that they may notbe using at the moment.

22:5030227I cannot get to involved but I am fairly certain regulations state that ALL NEW buses purchased by any bus company for local public service must be of the low floor easy access design.
