18:2382857All a waste of time and money, the Russians have it.

18:3182861all very dubious especially as president putin did not turn up, sounds like a stitch up may have taken place.
qatar for 2022, just shows that money talks, they have never even reached the last 32 in their history.
has anyone heard of a qatar football club or player?

18:3982865i would never say such a thing barry, so many coincidences, the 2 daves(cameron and beckham) plus others gave a brilliant presentation to no avail.
ask yourself these questions,
a) the english are more football mad than any other country.
b) all our stadiums are up to standard, none of russias are.
c) our public transport and infrastructure is already in place, russia will start on there's tomorrow.
d) if need be we could hold a world cup next week, russia will be hard put to get ready in 8 years.
e) all tickets would be sold in all stadiums a year in advance of the world cup happening, most russians would not be able to afford a single match ticket.
i could list more, but the oligarchs have more money than everybody else.

18:4582866A terrible shame, but it seems true that maybe some palms have been greased big time, this is not sour grapes either. I'm amazed at the result as the Russians just do not have the stadiums or infrastructive up to spec, Ah Well, the oligarchs have won

19:1582871Well I dont understand this at all. Only two nations/delegates voted for the UK bid. Ourselves and one other as I understand it. There is too much murky water in this process and it needs to be changed, even the English Lord involved in the process had to step down recently...so its all very odd. Clearly we were best placed to hold it but FIFA want to spread their footballing message further afield. That was their reasoning behind the Sth African decision...it wasnt a great world cup in Sth Africa, it being mostly notable for introducing the planet to the vuvuzuela!!
Great Pity

19:2282872It is really simple Paul - Sepp Blatter wanted it to be held in Russia, the FIFA delegates want to keep their posts - I will leave you to join the dots

19:2482873It has to be a stitch-up.
I'm not bothered about football at all, I don't think I watched a match at the last World Cup in SA, but it would bring in visitors and their spending power, which must be good.
Sour-Grapes doesn't come into it - (not) greasing palms might have.

19:2882875The presentation was by far the best it had every thing needed to win the bid, one cann't help thinking that there was some sculldugery somewhere along the way

19:2882876Wonder what odds the bookies will give on it being offered to Spain/Portugal or England in 5 years time when the Russian bid flounders in a sea of half built stadia and infrastructure and corruption trials

20:0682894For goodness sake , all of you stop bleating and accept the result. England lost and there's an end to the matter. We are now in the process of an outbreak of sanity. Now that we are not going to waste 3 billion pounds on this fiasco, perhaps blue David can get back to the job he was elected to do ,namely look after the down trodden and needy, although tories would find that task difficult under normal circumstances, so not at all hopeful on that score.

23:1582944Putin most likely knew he had won enough votes that is why he stayed at home. I am sorry for football fans but the result means our lives will not be completely dominated by the wretched game for months on end.
So for us non football people there is an up side.

23:3382950Howard ,
If you want to be sarcastic that is your right. I spent nine years being patriotic as you put it. So thanks for the ill graced observation. I dont need my patriotism brought into question by people who cant see past the end of there nose. So England lost the world cup "Boo Hoo" get a life!!

00:0582962Ian,
I think you should be addressing your "Calm down " remark to Howard who is probably going to spend the next six months crying "WE WAS ROBBED" personally I dont give a toss.
