Your contempt is misplaced.
I took a pay cut to move to the public sector.
I demand nothing.
You mention some professions, of which the pay is in line with that of the private sector.
Perhaps you should set yourself up as a doctor and undercut them all.

I will work for less to do a job I already do?
You have lost me Keith.
If you think that people only do jobs because of the associated wage, then we may as well end this discussion now. The only people I know that take that viewpoint are generally those who can do very little, but think the world owes them everything.

the simplest and fairest way around this is for you to demand an instant pay cut darren, mind you there might be some explaining to do with the missus.

Sadly there are a lot of people out there who think like that, or by choice enjoy sitting on their bums drawing whatever benefit they can get their greedy hands on.

Darren, your sentence: The only people I know that take that viewpoint are generally those who can do very little, but think the world owes them everything.
describes a good many in the public sector. As I know you, I know that you are not one of those but a good, dedicated teacher. But you yourself will know many who are.
The great difference between the public and private sectors is that private employers inevitably weed out the under-performers while the public sector doesn't.

As a serving Civil Servant I get a bit cross with all this talk of gold plated pensions and bonuses etc etc. Maybe that's how it is with the top brass but please remember the "peasants" who actually do the work. We get chuff all! Is it really a problem if people condense their hours? If the work gets done properly who cares? Is this yet another example of Whitehall bashing? I don't work in Whitehall so please don't bash me

I think we are all guinea pigs in the middle of an experiment for which they have forgotten to set up a control group!

Well said Jen. My brother is a civil servant but like you not in Whitehall and will have no gold plated pension. He is hard working and conscientious. Sometimes he chooses to start work early and finish late. He will then be able to take the odd Friday off. His colleagues get very resentful of this but many of them do not show up for work until 10.00 am. There are skivers in all walks of life, many of whom have more "sickies" than I have annual leave and here I am talking about the private sector.
