17:0885668 Kath, the picture you placed on here last week of The White Horse was the best view I`ve ever seen of the front. I didn`t comment on it at the time, hoping to get an up to date shot to put below for comparison. As it was not to be, I got a shot this morning and hope it was okay with you to copy your image above for comparison. Many thanks Kath, and many thanks Jeanette for the coffee this morning, still unable to consume stronger liquids. I did note on the first shot, the gap between letters S & E to allow for the downpipe.

20:0585703The top picture will have been taken with a large format plate camera on a tripod, judging from the angle and lack of converging perpendiculars, probably raised quite high as well.

20:1085705Brilliant Colin! What a good idea!
You are very observant about the S and E, I hadn't noticed the gap.
Quite a few small changes.
Wouldn't it be nice to see a picture of the pub from the 17th or 18th centuries !

20:4485709notice that the old photo shows that a brewer called "george beer" is the purveyor of fine ales then.
we have a major company in dover called "mike beer transport", i wonder if there is a connection.
not exactly a common name.

20:5185712I wonder why the down pipe was changed to having three bends instead of straight down, would it be to slow the water flow in some way. The major change seems to be the chimney loss plus the signs, the window and that lovely lantern.

21:0785719Thank you Kath, just needed angling round a little to catch those building`s behind. I could sit for hours viewing then and now picture`s. I`ll guess the landlord will be inside peering out at the photographer, or depending on the time of day, maybe a few locals are inside but told to stay put for fear of blurring the plate with any movement. The mind can wander all day long on such fanciful thought`s. Indeed it would be good to have a whole line up of picture`s covering this fine building in recent centuries.

20:5286113As it was my birthday today, I celebrated by having one small glass of wine at `The White Horse` my first drink since the end of October due to pounding headaches and signing Jeanette`s clipboard to sponsor her Boxing Day dip. I did notice she had a few more spaces for any other sponsors. Nice to see you again DT1 and Matt Bristow and children giving a family atmosphere to the place.

21:1786268Many thanks for above Vic, Jan, Jenni and Kath, I forgot all about that. I was in there again today to meet a mate of mine ex-railway but now deep sea again which he likes better. Nice just to try a small beer again, and a bottle of orange juice. If all goes well, I`m looking in there tomorrow, so any forumite`s seen will be bought a drink. I have to say though that I`m still restricted, due to my pharmacy`s error. P.S. Thank you for the card Kath. Summer days, sigh..........
