19:4981797I would suggest that the one doing the digging is you Jimmy - you seem obsessed with class and keep on about it, no-one else. Such obsessions seem usually to come from deep seated feelings of inadequacy.

23:5681846Class nowadays is nothing to do with money or birth, more about mindset and behaviour. Upper, middle, lower are all obsolete terms. It's about whether you take responsibility for your own life or not.

here we disagree, there still is a class system, and from some of the comments on here and by our unelected lords, and leading politicians you can see the class issue is still out there

09:1281871It's a bit old fashioned to say that class is a left wing obsession, too. It is talked about, for sure, by, ahem, older lefties, but it is a dying topic. But I think that is a bit of a shame, because it is a factor, albeit an almost taboo factor. In my younger days in particular I had a wide circle of buddies, and when the chips (or fries) were down they all reverted to "type". A bit of a social faux pas was ignored in the group but a great source of amusement once the poor old middle classer had left the building. Nothing has changed as far as I can see in my still reasonably eclectic circles. And that is neither good nor bad - just a fact of life. We bond and group and create bands to which we want to belong. It's a society thing!! I guess I am just lucky in that I can get along with most people and don't personally care!!

11:2381881I don't agree with what and how Mr Flight said but I would pat him on the back. He, obviously, like many others, some on here, believes in what he is saying. The difference is he has the strength to be open with it.
BarryW, you have stated on this forum many times, to many people, that they don't have your intelligence, business acumen, knowledge etc. Class?

11:2981882Class is entirely an attitude of mind.
There are plenty of high class people born in what Keith would like to regard his 'working class' and some real slobs born to the so called upper and middle classes.
Dividing society, creating a them and us attitude, suits the political aims of the left quite well.
I was born in Tower Hamlets, my dad was a butcher in Tower Hamlets Street where I was brought up, my grandad was from a coal mining family and he, himself went in the Royal Navy as a stoker. I have a touch of gypsy in me too..... I left school at 15 and have done many jobs in my time until settling into a career over 21 years ago.
From the age of 18 I got involved in the Conservative party through which I met people of all backgrounds. My first introduction to a 'polite' dinner party was when I was 19 with a friend and his wife who I met campaigning in the October 1979 general election. Since then such dinners have become part of my life including dinner with cousins of the Queen. Paula, herself, is a cousin to a baronet and I have met and been welcomed by that side of her family.
Never at any time have I felt anything but welcome and been treated and respected for who and what I am. The only snobbery I have ever found has been reverse snobbery. No-one has ever looked down on me.
Our so called class system is not a fixed inpenetrable thing though the left wing like to portray it otherwise.

15:0481895Alexander,
I consider your good self as in a class of your own!!

15:2381899I think BarryW is right - it is something from within - and that "fitting in" thing is often a reverse snobbery borne out of social insecurity and ignorance. Good manners - and "class" at best springs from good manners - are the manners that make people feel comfortable and at ease, bad manners do the reverse. People with real class create ease and social pleasure, simple as that. And those people come from all walks of life. The more we focus on the rights and wrongs of class the less opportunity we have to enjoy the people around us, whatever class they are!

15:2781901Just as an aside, I remember the first time I sat at a high table at Oxford. The sodding cutlery seemed to extend forever on each side of the setting!!! And I was already used to a fair bit of ironmongery at a table but this was extreme! I chose to ignore it, discreetly following what others were doing if I felt the need but generally doing my own thing (no change there then!!) - much to the affectionate amusement of some of my friends. And it was affectionate amusement!! I could have taken offence, but neither I nor they were like that - besides, Life is Too Short!! And anyone who does mind about such things to the point of offence has, de facto, no class!!!
