Not quite Howard but I'll give it to you.
Ok, here's the rundown. The Castrol sign is at the Reliance Garage at the top of Beaconsfield Road. The two derelect shops and smiling hoarding are now the layby by the Beacon Church. On the far left is the former Methodist Chapel that Cairns Chemist replaced.

This is a fairly good account Paul
http://80.168.49.251/website003/visitor_information/heritage_factsheets/john_wesley.aspx
It refers to "Shades", the use before Cairns. Before that it was John Blundel, a sort of Brighthouse of the 60's.

Wow you learn something new every day!!
Did wonder how that small building could be a pool hall, but it is a massive building behind the chemist - what is it now ?
Been nice knowing you :)

fhe town seems to be littered with former methodist chapels, how times have changed.
nowadays all the various factions of christianity seem to come under the umbrella of the ark christian centre.
except for the catholics as i recently found out.

Thank goodness we have people like Terry, Kath, Sheila and others who remember first hand these old places, then of course Scotchie for all his research.
If I've left anyone out above, I apologise - it's early in the morning (that's my excuse).

I love the description from Terry's link of the castle being on a mountain...........
......John Wesley first came to Dover on 28 January 1756 and established his first society here. "I preached at noon at Dover to a very serious, but small, congregation. We afterwards walked to the Castle, on the top of a mountain", he wrote. "It is an amazingly fine situation".......

Correct, opposite end to the yacht club on the top floor, though you have to be a bit of a dwarf to get onto it.
