My point is, that I doubt if there was any more in the 8 bells today, than there was in Kath's Inns almost 200 years ago, abusing the system.
That does not mean they are right to do these deadly deeds or that I agree with it, because I don't.

Once the signature was given, or an identifying cross with a witness (the sergeant), that was it!
Others were clubbed down and dragged onto ships.
Convicts were deported to Caribbean islands, to America, to Canada and to Australia.

the captain surveys the victims and sorts their duties out and is left with two strange looking brothers, one with massive ears and another with eyes like organ stops. after giving it a bit of thought he sends the one with eyes up into the crows nest and leaves the other one to swab the deck.

As for the welfare state, people must remember that William Beveridge was a believer in eugenics. Perhaps in a perverse way the Eight Bells is trying to address this with cheap booze and steak?
