Ernie, regeneration, you say!
That's interesting. You will no doubt know that Burlingtom House is supposed to come down, and some other concrete objects in the vicinity.
If you don't know where that place is, just take a look around you and you'll soon see it, and see why it can't come down that easily.
There was talk of building shopping lanes in the Saint James area, known as DTIZ, of which Burlington House is at the extreme end.
And also a cable car from "somewhere in Dover" to the castle.
My view is that a taxi would be cheaper.
One big underestimation in the idea of attracting passing port-traffic to stop over, is that if lanes were built next to Townwall Street, we'd also need a sizable parking place for cars to stop.
It so happens that, in order to build lanes, the only available carpark in that area would have to go, because DTIZ is a carpark
Now one could have argued that it may be better to keep the carpark so that people could stop over and have a lunch, but that would mean sacrificing the lanes. However, DDC demolished the only building along Townwall Street that could have served as a restaurant while being visible to passing port-traffic.
They transformed it into a wooden boarded barrier with fresco paintings
So anyone passing along Townwall Street, and seeing these fantastic works of art, and Burlington House, will most probably look straight ahead and drive on.
I think they call it impressionism.
