What do YOU like about your town DOVER

I am pretty new to this forum and the town.
I have looked around Dover and surounding villages etc.
Throughout the years, my family have visited as tourists, criuse pasangers, and we now live here.
So maybe I look through different eyes so to speak.
We came because its seafront is great.
The country around is is superb.
There is soooo much to do. As well as see.
There's a lot a young family can do that does not cost a lot.
Ok the town centre is not great but have you looked at Ramsgate,Margate,Folkestone ?
Come on folks they are worse than Dover. much much worse.
So tell me folks WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT DOVER.

You could look at the archives but you would be looking forever and ever and ever.
Cracking place to live but so much negativity and you still have to find out, you will learn.
Iv'e been trying for 30yrs to get things going in some areas and have now given up due to things that will become obvious.
Enjoy the banter, enjoy the forum. the members are second to none.
I live here because my kids are here. otherwise I would have gone years ago.

What do I like about Dover, quite simply the people and the area itself.
I came to this area in the early 1960s, left in 2000 to go to lovely Suffolk returned in 2004 to find nothing changed except the town was scruffier than I remembered. Most of our complaints about the town are because we want to see it improve not stagnate or go downhill like Margate seems to have done.-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

im a real dovorian am passionate for a better dover so whilst it may appear forumites are negative, it's realy m,ore of a case of frustration of the bodies able to make changes unwilling/or unable to do so.

hills and the scenery
cliffs and the scenery
castle
forumnites(most lol)
the forum for enriches our lives and giving first information.

Colours are great and since we had the recent expensive makeover all is fine. I enjoy both hotels each end of it too, each offering a different level of service, Premier Inn Marine Court more proletariat but nicely so, and the Dover Marina more pooosh for us champagne socialists
... but it all adds to the overall enjoyment. The sailing and the seasports centre are also enjoyable aspects. Will be trying the Hythe Bay Restaurant in there shortly..reports suggest its doing very well. you may do better to join" friends of dover castle" rather than english heritage. - 13 October 2011 09:01131291You can join the friends of Dover Castle for alot less then You can to get into the castle please go to our webb page for cost,once you join us you can go into the castle when you like all year at no cost.

Dover is full of history and heritage, surrounded by beautiful countryside and has good access to London and mainland Europe.
I suspect that like most people we are here because we have a strong affection for the town but like most people we moan (as Jan says) because we know it can be so much better. - 13 October 2011 11:23131331Welcome Ernie.

I love living in Dover, I settled here just over 10 years ago. When I first came over to the UK from Ireland many years ago now, I kept being drawn to Dover, almost like I had lived here before in a past life, if indeed there is such a thing. I love the Castle, the Seafront, the Marina, the White Cliffs and the easy access to the little towns and villages and other seaside resorts not to mention France. With the added bonus of the high speed train I can now whizz into London in no time at all
Unfortunately the town itself lets Dover down, it has been grossly neglected for many a year now, so much so, that when recession hits, it hits Dover harder and brings it to its knees. Such a terrible tragedy that a town like Dover, steeped in history has been let down so badly particulary in my view by Central Government.
As I have said on this Forum many times, whenever anyone asks where I live and I say Dover, I always get a negative response but I love it. - 13 October 2011 17:12131389Hello Ernie and welcome. I have not lived in Dover that long but share you way of thinking.

I ask, because the other day I was talking to a Dovorian (is that right folks)
All I heard from him was how hard done by the town was and what a tip it is.
I asked him " Have you nothing good to say about the place ?
He was quite shocked that someone asked.
He was also ( his words) VERY VERY SUPRISED that I had boosted Dover up.
Maybe....... just maybe we could all start there.......
