rather a bolt from the blue the whole thing seemed to be drifting, the article does not say where the funding will come from though.

John Pegg has not given up on the project and I believe now has a lot of support including I also think from DDC.
I'd certainly welcome it as it will create some of the permanent presence that the Heritage requires to secure it from vandalism, anti-social behaviour, etc
It is a very fitting site for a memorial looking out over the channel over which so many people travelled to war and never returned....

still a lot of money in these austere times though, i spoke to john at last years western heights weekend and the impression i got then was that he was banging his head against a brick wall.
english heritage seemed to be blowing hot and cold at the time.
good to hear that ddc are being supportive but i cannot see them being able to do much more than give planning permission.

Brief and to the point while the comments tell the story. The White Cliffs are iconic the world over and forever linked to the Second World War, thanks to the famous song. The good this could do for Dover is undeniable (to most) and would be the perfect way to honour a debt to millions of commonwealth servicemen and women.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

I couldn't agree more.
The more "bodies" that support this initiative the greater chance of success; DDC saw a long time ago, the benefits this would bring Dover.
English Heritage I understand from John - we had a chat about it at the Tattoo, are coming over to the idea, but they thought it an inappropriate site before - I can't imagine a more appropriate one though.
This will do Dover an enormous amount of good; as it is to be dedicated to those men and women from the Commonwealth who died in the two World Wars and that is around a third of the World's population.
Another reason for Dover to "up" their game, with a Town-Team Manager, working with a Plan of Action for Dover and a Tourism Strategy.

just a thought, would the cruise ships put it on there tour list along with the drop redoubt and grand shaft.

No Brian they would not. They don't do day-excursions round the port they call in, not enough money for them.
The independant cruise passengers are the ones we should be trying to catch/entice into Town and visiting the sites we have here, but there isn't a tour-bus - large or small, that takes people on an organised trip round to our local sites.

ah but roger the big bus that runs in a circular route which includes the castle, town center and cruise terminal could be used to cover the western hieghts.and yes before you ask double deckers can get up there.

I'm not disputing whether double deckers can get up there Brian and as all this is in the future, the first thing to do is talk to the bus operator; who will pay him to go up there ? the price he has settled on is just for that circular route - cruise terminal, Market Square, Castle.

i would have thought the tour bus itinerary would change automatically once the war memorial was completed.

With a Castle on the Eastern Heights and the Drop Redoubt visitors centre and National War Memorial on the Western heights it would surely become more 'profitable' for a private concern to consider running a tour bus?

Absolutely Chris. It's simply supply and demand. There may be no current demand, but things will change if this goes ahead - any bus operator needs to be adaptable if the demand is there and they want to make a profit. Mustn't get locked into negative thinking based on current business models.

With the 'bigger picture' in mind with park n ride and cablecars, and integrated transport system will be vital to connect the attractions. In turn Dover would be a "come to and stay" location and more of a cruise visitor to see, rather than a pass through and day-trip destination

That is absolutely right Paul and Phil, so there is plenty of time to organise this kind of thing for when it all does come about.
To support the current histroric sites and attractions, this service could be set up now for the cruise season, but there is no one brave enough to try it out - even the Town Council couldn't get any one to put in a tender.

the tender went out rather late not giving potential operators enough time to think it all through in my opinion.
