Jan as I said earlier, I'll defend them too.
What about my idea:
You want the Mayor, you pay for her?

I have mixed feelings about the Town Mayor, a figure head is like the one on a ship...... sometimes good to look at but otherwise fairly useless.

I'd get another ban if I'd said that

how far would you take your puritanism david? say for example the queen wants to go over to upton park to see her team play would her courtiers have to advise her to change to the district line at mile end and not get off at west ham station because she would look a right pillock in front of the peasants that reside there?

Its quite simple Howard, if a business wants to see the mayor they pay for it, why should everybody else.
Your analogy of the Queen going to West Ham is just ridiculous.

Its a kind invitation but one I'll decline thanks Mr Matcham.
I'm certain there are lots of people who give their time for no personal gain and with very good intentions, its when I have to pay for it I believe I have the right to comment.

disagree david the queen and members of her family carry out much the same functions as local mayorlty but on a much larger scale and much higher expense.
some years ago i met princess diana at the opening of a council run sports centre, the cost of her and her entourage would have been enormous to a local council.

My point Howard was your analogy about the queen going to West Ham on the underground.
I'm sure Cllr Nicholas will be flattered that you've compared her popularity with that of one of the most recognised people in the 20th century.

Carry on Mr Little, we need the Royal family and what they do,I think we should go back to the days when a king or Queen ruled the land ,and in France the Town Mayors plays a very big part in running a town and rules over all. What he or she says is done. And you do have a right to comment,so say what you need to,but I try to stop if it means being rude about aperson.,and no need to swear if one does that they lose their views they are trying to put across.

I haven't sworn and I don't know Cllr Nicholas, my point is that in tough times we shouldn't be spending it on chauffering local politicians around.

I agree with that to.

The Jag is not new. Mark performs many other duties for the council besides driving the Chairman and guarding the chain. The Chairman's office deserves a degree of dignity. I don't consider it a wast of taxpayers' money. Our chairman does not use it willy-nilly. Compared with many other local authorities I think we get pretty good value from the senior councillors.

A little bird told me there were plans to get a new Jag recently (better terms, more efficient etc etc) but they were dropped for fear of the response once David found out!
There is a balance to be drawn between civic pride and civic extravagance, there'll always be disagreements between individuals over where to draw the line.
In defence of Sue she has been the most active of the Chairmen that I have known of in recent years, some of it in public but a lot behind the scenes.

I think we are in danger of applauding only a few,
now, im sure Sue does a good job, but over the years there has been a handful of cllrs from the 2 main parties who work hard.
With all due respect to Sue there has been a number of hard working chairpersons over the years from both parties

the problem as i see it keith is that sue cannot get involved with political slanging matches like other councillors so attacks on her are uncalled for.
