Its fair to say I'm critical of DDC and the amount of time and money wasted by and on councillors, watching the BBC Daily Politics yesterday morning I was poised, knives ready, to launch into a diatribe. But all credit to the Paul, he announced that contrary to the arrogant, out of touch wasters in Tunbridge Wells, our lot have taken a pay cut.
Well done Paul, theres still far too many councillors but at least its a start.

The allowances shown were up to March last year (2012).

the arrogance of that bloke from tunbridge wells telling us why allowances were rising while services were being cut beggars belief.

And well done to Madam Chairman who spotted me crossing the road in Eythorne today while she was being conveyed in splendour towards a luncheon engagement with some of her loyal subjects in Nonington and was gracious enough to order her chauffeur (Mark) to stop.
I was very grateful for the opportunity to exchange pleasantries with her and her entourage, it's not often nowadays I get the chance to touch my forelock in such distinguished company.

Good to see we're all in it together and that councillors are setting the example of dispensing with chauffeur driven cars.
Just who do these people think they are?

So what do you suggest David ?Catch a a 60a then an 89 bus to Nonington and walk a mile.lArrive on a public engagement looking unkempt. The chauffeur has a two fold job not only does he drive me to engagements but he is there to protect he chain.
You obvisously donot know the protocol of the role .Do you object to the Town Mayor of Dover being driven by a chauffeuer?
I have to pay out a considerable amount of my own money as your representative.

I'm sure one of the party has a car, why couldn't you use that and pay a £1 each for petrol, its Nonington not Nottingham.
And yes I do object to the Town Mayor having a car, the money should be put to better use, its antiquated and arrogant behaviour.
Vic, I don't care what colour rosette they wear, its a waste of taxpayers money

Whether it's a Blue or Red (District) Council Vic, the Chairman is still the representative of the District.
The Mayors of Dover, Deal or Sandwich are elected by the majority party.

There is over 400years of the History of Dover behind the Mayors chain, what history is there in the district one,(None).
One thing we might agree on is the Mayor should be pick by the public not any party. The mayors roll is seen as the face of Dover, and looked at as the high office, even if it is not, that is how the public see that roll.

David, I do not begrudge Sue the use of the car one little bit on official business especially as she is well known for using public transport most of the time. As an aside it might be a good idea to remember that some of us especially the elderly do not or can not drive, like Sue I would dread having to visit some of our villages by public transport, that is if they even have a regular bus or train service.
I must admit I am beginning to find your constant petty gripes against anything and everything to do with DDC or their representatives a little irritating, remember the story about crying 'wolf' to often.

You might consider it petty gripes Jan, I consider it wasting taxpayers money.
I started this thread by patting DDC on the back but I'll continue to point out misuse of public funds..

the public and new business start ups invite the mayor/council chaiman because there will be an official car, chain of office etc.
they would feel insulted otherwise.

let's take a recent example david, illy's opened in market square, they had the mayor down in her regalia to officially open it.
picture in the paper and probably on a wall inside, businesses, schools, scout groups etc love it.

Howard, I'll give you a £ for every picture of the Mayor in a business in Dover you can find, you give me a £ for ones that haven't. 99% won't even know who it is. Its Ann Smith actually, I've met her, very nice lady.
But thats neither here nor there, a chauffeur driven car for the chairman of DDC is a waste of taxpayer's money, we have better things to do with it.

Here's a solution for Howard, Jan and Cllr Nicholas:
If an organisation wants the Mayor to attend a function, why don't they go and pick her up?

Then we will have to agree to disagree because as a taxpayer on this occasion I do not consider it a waste of my money, and arriving by taxi would not be the same.
I must admit to being a bit worried though as I am defending something to do with the council.
