the "big society" was just a conference sound bite nothing more than that, it does not take into account that some people do take responsibility for things and others couldn't care less.
i have no problem with dealing with weeds that grow out of my front wall and the one next door but am not going all the way down the road to do everybody elses, neither will i do the ones in gutters.
the ones in brian's pictures are not part of anyone's house or business i notice.

that's right howard, just a main through road with foot paths either side.just a note that a lot of cruise walk to town etc on both sudes of the road.the road between the cruise terminal and the market square do look neglected in places, which makes the town in genral looks run down and uncared for.

Maybe be Alec, but with (many, perhaps most) tenants of private rented housing not even caring about their gardens, they won't be clearing the outside of them I'm sure - sadly.

Still fighting the elderberry, brambles, nettles and assorted weeds in Salisbury Road, their seeds all ready for next year .

The gardener came and weeded our front flat garden. All he did was move around the dirt at the bottom of the tree with a hoe..The flats are DDC.Phoned the gardening section at DDC and left a message on the answer phone.Guess what no contact from them. Its disgusting that they totally ignore tenants. Here is a photo after the gardener had finished.

Spraying is ok but the dead weeds still need to be picked up or all you have done is turn green weeds into brown ones they have to be pulled out then spray where you pulled them out, that will for some time stop them growing there again.Just spraying is doing only half the job not even half.

Spraying with glyphosate makes them die off right down to the roots but you have to wait till they go brown, otherwise they will regrow vigorously if you pull them up too soon.
