Website boob?
- 24 November 2010 10:1781417Peter, well said, that's the tone that was meant in my original posting. It was a bit of fun spotting a council cock-up and I thought someone from DTC or the councillors who post on here would have spotted it and got it changed pretty quick.
I declined four requests for radio and TV interviews yesterday as I'm a shy retiring sort (
) and I'm not the story but just the person who spotted it. I only spoke on Monday evening to the press agency who were put onto it by our local press.
However, having seen Mike Webb's response I have to say I'm not impressed. As a member of the Bureau of Freelance Photographers I have to ask on behalf of our membership why the council should expect to get it's photos for free when it pays for all the other goods and services it uses? - 24 November 2010 11:3081425Howard your posting re my quote Nit Picking has been deleted??
- 24 November 2010 12:2281426Publicity such as this isn't necessarily bad publicity - just think how many people have now logged in to the website and seen the good work and events that are being carried out by DTC? I can't imagine many people will decide not to visit Dover because of a website banner, if so, more fool them.

- 24 November 2010 17:4781465With a high-quality digital camera, all one needs to make a good photo is a tripod stand, to keep the camera straight, or a very steady hand. And to walk around Dover and chose sights to take photos of. I managed to borrow a digital camera months ago to make pictures in Dover, and had a painting and decorating tools set on my last computer before it broke down, which served to trim a large picture or choose a particular part of it while trimming off all the rest.

the point i was trying to make is that d.t.c. cannot afford to pay for a photo.
if someone like ray or matt gave us a price we could then decide whether to have a whip round to commission one for our beleagured town council. - 24 November 2010 18:5781477A competition would be a sensible idea and offer a £50 prize won't break the bank, but I can see the problem in that a photo suitable for a banner isn't something that would be easy to find on a stock photo site. That said they could quite easily just go for a walk with a cameraphone these days for something reasonable....

The British Journal of Photography has now got it on their latest just in hot of the press Newsletter, which I receive regularly. Well...I was gobsmacked to see it on there...even on there!!
They are not amused either, being a flagship for photographers trying to make a living, that the Dover Town Council want a new picture for FREE.
The mock ups on here are brill guys! and certainly worth a few bob of anyone's money.

You don't need a high resolution pic for putting on a website so top quality prices aren't necessary. When I was looking for the comparison pic to go in my original post I found a site that had 12 downloads of a suitable resolution to use on websites for £29. DTC wouldn't need 12 but presumably the webmaster who runs their site would have been able to source something for under a fiver, being a regular user. Perhaps he should fess up as to where it was sourced and how much it cost!
Of course if you commission a photographer to spend a day on location getting an original it would cost hundreds but that's not necessary with such a well photographed subject.
Or you could use one of the free ones from DDC that Paul Watkins has offered.
