Just a quick question: what water rates do you pay? We are looking at our bills and wondering if we are being ripped off!!! Apparently the average across the country is £376, but ours is over £600. How about you, if you don't mind me asking?!

When we had a meter installed the water bills fell by more than 50%.

I agree with Peter, bills are cheaper. You only pay for what you use and are more wary in usage

Same as with Peter. We had a meter fitted after our two sons left home. We ended up paying just over half.

the only problem with a meter is if there is an underground leak on your property you will not know it until you get the bill.
i learned this from experience.

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".
Thanks chaps - anyone brave enough to tell me the costs......? The meter may be a better idea than I thought!!

i also had a meter IMPOSED meters are on usage so if theres only 2 of you theres less usageso bills do reduce
if not it becomes costly
and won't mention this govt has allowed(throiugh ofwat)
bills to soar over the rate of inflation this year (all legal rip off)

Bern,
We've been on a meter since we moved here ten years ago, no problems at all.
Standing charge £16.68 per 6 months (might vary on rating band)
Water - £1.4841 per cubic metre (which they say is equivalent to 1000 litres, 220 gallons, 500 kettles, 12 baths or 30 standard showers).
We average fairly constant 40 cubic metres per 6 months but you learn simple economy tricks fairly easily (like in summer, catch the cold water until the hot tap warms up and use it to water the garden) or more extreme ones like only flush for a number two if you're really tight!

Think I'll go back to the old days and just drink beer instead. Don't fancy doing the washing in it though.

Bern our water is about £300 with sewerage a bit higher I can not remember exactly, we are not on a meter..........yet. Even with a meter I am not expecting ours to go up, more than likely it will go down.

Jan - you are just down the street from me - is yours for a whole house?

Yes for the whole house with three people sometimes more, but not many baths mainly showers which is why ours should go down.

Thank you Jan.
we have a water meter but i was told the first three bills are still based on estimated , all water companies are a rip off im still arguing with one of them after a leak i had for a month after water meter was installed never thought i would be charged for their lameness.
