18:0577862Terry - we had this photo of Peter Street (post No.17 above), down as c.1925.
Bob has now passed to me some text which went with the picture:
"Well, sure enough, on July 9, 1998, my "Memories" page carried this story "Len's mum had 14 kids to raise" - Len Mills who was born in Colebran Street, Dover, in 1912, was fascinated to see the picture of Peter Street ... because the house, No. 9, was where he lived as a child. In fact Len, whose mother, Hannah (she liked to be called Susannah) had 14 children, has probably lived in more houses in that street than anyone - 6,9, 11, 25, 26 and 45 - plus others in streets close by, as his mother struggled to bring up a growing family. The house with a flat roof, he reckons, was pictured about 1910, judging by family clothing.... " Len and his wife Joyce, later lived in Dour House, Maison Dieu Road and in 1998 celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. Len's mother, born about 1870, once told Joyce she had 17 pregnancies. Hannah Mills was the daughter of Thomas Pepper a freeman of Dover, while Joyce was the daughter of a freeman, of York, and was proud to show friends and family framed certificates to prove it. (The story is too long to reproduce in its entirety.)
